The state of California has set exacting standards through its Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act, commonly known as "Proposition 65." Initially, Proposition 65 was conceived to protect drinking water sources from chemical contamination. Over time, however, its scope has expanded significantly, leading to ubiquitous warnings for all California consumers.
Proposition 65 mandates the inclusion of warning labels (see example below) for products that may contain any of the 1000+ chemicals or ingredients listed by the California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) as carcinogens or reproductive toxicants. These chemicals encompass common chemicals and elements like wood dust, brass, and many other substances we encounter every day.
Remarkably, a wide range of elements listed under Proposition 65 are typical additives found in products such as jewelry, lamps, ceramic tableware, lead crystal glasses, electric cords, automobiles, beauty products, and, of course, furniture and home goods.
Given the possibility that wood dust or any of the numerous Proposition 65-listed ingredients might be present in our furniture or packaging materials, we are obliged to display Proposition 65 warnings for our products.
