How to Set Up a Home Gym

Posted by Alyssa on February 4, 2018

home gym

If you like working out on your own but never seem to find the time to make it to the gym or struggle to find someone to watch your kids, setting up a home gym could be the solution! While it may seem like something that will take up a lot of room and cost a lot of money, creating a home gym doesn’t have to be an overwhelming process. With just a few pieces of equipment and a little bit of space, you’ll be able to set up a home gym in no time!

How to Set Up a Home Gym

The first thing you need to do is figure out where you are going to set up your home gym. If you have a room that you can dedicate to your gym, great! If you don’t, you’ll still be able to have a home gym. You may have to share your home office or even push aside the coffee table to make room for your yoga mat, but you can do it!

You’ll want to make sure you have the proper flooring for your workout. If you’re using weights, consider bringing in a mat to muffle the sound and protect your floors. You should also have speakers nearby so you can blast your favorite workout playlist. Whatever your space, make sure you create an environment conducive to whatever workout you choose.

Next, you’ll need equipment. This is where you could end up spending more than you planned, so make sure you start with the basics. A bench, some weights, and whatever else you need to start your basic workout. If you have space and budget, you may consider bringing in a treadmill or elliptical. Either way, just remember that you don’t have to have everything right at the beginning. Make this a process and add equipment little by little.

Once you have the equipment, you need to figure out how you are going to organize everything. If you have a room dedicated to your home gym it will be easier than if you’re sharing the space. Shelves with bins or baskets to hide your weights, or even a storage ottoman, will keep your exercise equipment out of sight.

Now that everything is set up and ready to go, you need to find the perfect workout routine for you! There are plenty of exercises you can do at home with or without equipment. Whatever you choose to do, remember that you’re making strides at being healthier, and that is a great goal.

Exercise Bike Benefits

Posted by Alyssa on January 12, 2018

exercise bike

There are so many health benefits that come from using an exercise bike. If you’ve had the chance to go to a cycling class and loved the intensity of your workout, or if you’re just starting to exercise and looking for a place to start, consider getting your own exercise bike. Once you start riding, you’ll never want to stop! Check out 5 exercise bike benefits below.

Exercise Bike Benefits

  1. STRENGTHEN YOUR HEART: Exercise bikes are a great way to get your heart pumping. Like any muscle, your heart needs to be strengthened and kept in shape. Riding an exercise bike helps your heart become stronger, which helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, lower high blood pressure, and regulate your blood sugar.
  2. GAIN MUSCLES AND STRENGTHEN YOUR LEGS: One great feature of an exercise bike is that you can change the level of resistance depending on the type of workout you want. The more resistance you have during your ride, the more toned your legs, thighs, and buttocks will be! Just be careful you don’t overdo it right off the bat. You may need to work up to the highest level of resistance.
  3. LOSE WEIGHT: Working out on an exercise bike is one of the fastest ways to burn calories, which will help you lose weight. Just like gaining muscles depends on the level of intensity, so does burning calories. The more intense your workout, the more calories you will burn!
  4. LOW IMPACT AND GENTLE ON JOINTS: Unlike running or jogging, which has a high impact on your ankles, knees, and hips, exercise bikes are smooth and gentle. If you are concerned about your joints or are recovering from an injury exercise bikes provide one of the gentlest workouts.
  5. CONVENIENT: With an exercise bike, you won’t have to check the weather or wait for the next nice day to get your ride in. Regardless of the weather or the time of day, you’ll be able to fit in your workout.

Have you used an exercise bike? How do you like it?

Workout At Home

Posted by Alyssa on January 9, 2018

workout

Getting to the gym can be tough. Between work and kids, social lives and things that need to be done at home, it can be easy to slide the gym lower and lower down your priority list. Exercise is too important to ignore though! Not only does exercising help control your weight, it boosts your mood, helps you sleep better at night, and increases your energy level. Even without going to the gym there are some simple, at home workouts you can squeeze into your day whenever you have the time.

At Home Workouts

If you have space, an at-home gym will help you get an effective workout in. You’ll be able to strengthen your muscles and, with some machines, get a good cardio workout as well. However, not everyone has the room or budget to bring in their own equipment. Don’t worry! There are plenty of at home workouts you can do without any equipment at all.

You can combine upper and lower body exercises to get a full body workout. Pick four or five exercises and do one movement after another. Try to do 20 reps per exercise for the best results!

UPPER BODY:

Push-Ups

Pike Walk/Pushup Combo

Commando

Tricep Dips

LOWER BODY:

Lunges

Jump Squat

Low Side-to-Side Lunge

Wall Sit

CORE:

Plank

Mountain Climber

V-Up

Reverse Crunch

These are just a few at home workouts you could do. There is so much more online! What are some of your favorites?

Elliptical vs Treadmill

Posted by Alyssa on January 4, 2018

elliptical vs treadmill

If you’re starting to plan out your New Year’s Resolution of working out and are wondering if you should start by using an elliptical or a treadmill, take a moment to stop and be proud of yourself. You’re doing it! You’re following through on your goal of being healthier and getting fit. Well done! And now back to the big debate of ellipticals vs treadmills. We’ve listed the pros and cons of each machine below so you can make the decision for yourself.

Elliptical vs Treadmill

elliptical

ELLIPTICAL

Pros

  • If you have joint or muscle pain, or have been recently injured, the elliptical is very low impact.
  • Settings on the elliptical allow you to vary the resistance for a personally designed workout.
  • By using your arms to push and pull the handles, while at the same time engaging your core, you will be able to complete a full-body workout.
  • Most ellipticals let you stride in reverse, which will work a whole other set of muscles and can add variety to your workout routines.

Cons

  • It can be easy to let the momentum of the elliptical power the machine rather than exerting effort yourself. This makes it easy to end up with a subpar workout.
  • Initially it may feel a little bit awkward to use an elliptical before you master the movements.

 treadmill

TREADMILL

Pros

  • No matter the weather, you’ll be able to get a jog or run done.
  • Settings on your treadmill will allow you to set a variety of inclines and speeds, which allows you to personalize your workout.
  • It’s pretty easy to get started on a treadmill - if you can run, jog, or walk you can use one!

Cons

  • Running on the treadmill has a high impact on your joints and muscles. This is not necessarily a bad thing but if you have joint pains or injuries you may want to avoid using the treadmill.
  • The focus on a treadmill is the lower body so you won’t get a full body workout by using one.

At the end of the day, the decision of whether a treadmill or an elliptical is better comes down to the individual person using it. If you’ve never used either machine before, experiment on both to see which one is the most comfortable for you to use.

How to Pick a Treadmill

Posted by Alyssa on January 12, 2017

how to pick treadmill

Many people including myself have made a resolution to be healthier and more active this year. Many people including myself find this resolution to be extremely difficult to make happen. It's especially hard to get started when schedules are complicated the gym is expensive and the weather is bad. That's why more and more people have started working out at home. Treadmills are one of the most popular pieces of home workout equipment but how do you choose which one to buy that's right for you?

manual treadmill

Manual Treadmills -

On a manual treadmill there is no motor. Your feet are what get the belt moving This makes a manual treadmill a cheaper and more compact option than a motorized treadmill. Because you don't need an electrical outlet this treadmill can be used anywhere. It is also a safer option for people with children and pets because when you stop walking it stops moving. On the flip side a manual treadmill has fewer setting options and cannot be adjusted during your workout.

Motorized Treadmills -

Motorized treadmills get going as soon as you press start. On many models you can adjust the speed level of incline and workout program while using the machine. Because the belt is continuously moving at a consistent pace it's harder to slack off mid-workout. You do need to be near an electrical outlet to use the machine and because the belt continuously moves it's important to follow all safety recommendations.

Good luck with your health goals If you have any suggestions on how to get out and get moving let me know and check out more exercise equipment here.
