  1. Start by clearing out all your cupboards and cabinets. Once everything is emptied out, wipe down the shelves, toss out expired food, empty boxes, and donate any kitchen tools you aren’t using.
  2. Assess your kitchen and figure out what makes sense to be in each cabinet. Where should your food go? Your appliances? Dishes? You use your kitchen so you know best where things should belong.
  3. Once you start filling your cabinets back up, make sure you keep things you use most at eye level. If you can’t reach it easily it will probably not be used.
  4. After your kitchen is all packed up, do your best to keep it that way!

How to Organize Your Room

Posted by Alyssa on February 19, 2019

room

How in the world do you keep your room organized? I live in a small house with little storage options, which means my husband and I share a small closet. Let’s just say the top of our dresser has become the second dresser and it drives me crazy! I’ve decided it’s time to take control of our room and the mess. It’s time to get organized! I had to look up some ideas for inspiration to help me get started, and I thought I’d share in case any of you are having a hard time staying on top of your mess as well.

  1. Purge your closet and get rid of your junk! Your life will be so much easier with fewer things to keep organized.
  2. Figure out your storage situation. If you’re lucky enough to have a huge walk-in closet, bring in baskets, bins, hangers, etc. to keep everything where it belongs. If you’re like me, on the other hand, and have very little storage you’ll have to get creative. Use under the bed storage, dressers, and shelves to help add more storage options.
  3. Store off-season clothing out of sight and away from the clothes you’ll be using. You’ll have to rotate your clothes with the new seasons, but that’ll give you even more chances to go through and clean out unworn, damaged, or ill-fitting clothing.
  4. Shoes are so hard to store so figure out something that works for you and your space! Lining them up in cubbies, on shelves, or in hanging shoe racks will help keep them organized and easy to find.
  5. Keep a garbage can in your room so you can keep trash from gathering on your dresser or on the floor.
  6. Find a small bowl or basket to keep your small accessories, wallet, phone, etc. in. Your dresser will be clean and you’ll know exactly where to find what you need.

Hope that helps!

Storage Room Ideas

Storage Room Ideas

What is it about the beginning of a new year that inspires so many people to organize their homes? I admit that I am one of those people and I’ve definitely made my way through some pretty cluttered closets already in the past couple of weeks. It feels so good to open cupboard doors without the fear of falling objects, but I’m dreading my next project - the storage room. Our storage room has become a catch-all for anything we don’t have a place for and anything we are trying to hide before guests come. If you’re like me and ready to start organizing, check out some of these storage room ideas and see if they’ll help get you started!

Storage Room Ideas

Pull everything out of storage room and go through your boxes and piles. If you haven’t touched that thing shoved way back in the corner in months, if not years, then you probably won’t miss it if you donate it or throw it away. Purge your storage room!

Put everything in bins to keep them organized. You can color coordinate the bins according to what’s in them (holidays, seasons, specific products, etc.) or stick with clear bins that will allow you to see what is in each box. Label your bins so you know where things are without searching too hard.

If you have wall space, use it! Install a pegboard to hang smaller objects or shelves for bins and boxes. Make sure regardless of whether or not you have wall space to use you keep things frequently used within easy reach.

Last but not least, make sure everything has a place and there isn’t anything loose on the floor. Loose items on the floor invite more clutter, so to make sure you avoid just tossing things into the room.

Good luck and share any ideas you have for keeping storage rooms organized with us!

Organization Tips: Kitchen

Posted by Alyssa on October 28, 2018

Organizing a kitchen (and keeping it organized) can be one of the most frustrating and overwhelming projects in your house. So many things are moved and used and replaced and put away that your cabinets can go from organized to destroyed in days. At least that’s how it is at my house! I’ve been making a list of things to organize and clean up this fall before winter comes and my kitchen is at the top of the list. In an effort to do it right and get my kitchen in good shape, I’ve looked up some different organization tips that I thought I’d share.

Organization Tips: Kitchen

Before you actually begin organizing your kitchen, empty all your cabinets. This will give you a chance to throw away or donate any broken dishes, unused appliances, or duplicate items. Empty your pantry and find any expired foods or empty containers that you can get rid of.

Once everything has been emptied and you’ve wiped out your cabinets, group items together. Baking items, dishes, glasses, etc. should be near each other when put away and by grouping them together you’ll be able to see how much space you’ll need for each group.

Think through your kitchen and how you use it. Notice where your dishwasher, sink, oven, and refrigerator are and what things you use in that area. Ask yourself where you prep food and what items you use most frequently in that space. This will help you decide where each item in your kitchen should go.

Start organizing your cabinets and drawers! Use Lazy Susans, drawer dividers, and clear containers to help utilize your cabinet space and keep things where they belong. Make sure you are keeping things you use most frequently easy to reach and put away.

Now that your kitchen is organized, hopefully, you’ll be able to keep it that way! Good luck and let us know any organization tips you have used for your kitchen.

7 Little Ways to Help You Feel Organized

Posted by Andie on September 21, 2018

I love the craziness of summer, but I'm always happy to fall into a routine once fall rolls around the corner.  There is something about the start of a new school year that makes me start craving and yearning for more organization and structure in my life.    What better place to start incorporating organization than in your home?  Here are 7 simple things you can do around your home to help you feel more organized and put together on the regular...

1. Have a place to hang your keys
I would be LOST if I didn't have a hook for my keys.  My keys were always floating around between my purse, the kitchen counter, my jacket, the sofa, etc.  I can't even tell you how many minutes (maybe hours) of my life I started saving once we got a dedicated key hook by the door.

via pinterest

2. Get a bin/basket to hold your mail
Mail is one of the biggest culprits at my house for creating CLUTTER.  It always ends up on the kitchen counter, the floor, the sofa (maybe mail and keys are more alike than I thought?), or on the mudroom bench.  If it's the same for your family, get a dedicated mail bin to keep the mess at bay.

via pinterest

3. Get storage for your bathroom toiletries
It's amazing how beautiful ordinary things like cotton balls, q tips, soap, and dental floss can look if it's tucked away nicely in pretty storage containers.  It will also help you keep your bathroom clean!

via pinterest

4. Place baskets around your house that hold diapers/wipes
If you aren't in the diapers/wipes phase of life (parents or grandparents with littles around) you can go ahead and skip this tip.  If you do have little ones, you know how frustrating it can be to have to walk up a long staircase in search of a diaper (I know, first world problems for sure).  Solution?  Make sure you have a well stocked diaper storage basket on every floor of the house so that you're prepared to clean up when accidents strike in no time!

via pinterest

5. Get baskets/bins to hold shoes by the door
Shoes are one of my worst nightmares when it comes to keeping a clean home.  They are everywhere!  All the time!  If you don't have a dedicated home for them near the doorway, GAME OVER.  In our family, each child has their own shoe basket, and it's made a world of a difference.

6. Find a large basket to hold blankets in the tv room
We are a family that loves to snuggle.  When we have family movie nights, we have no less than about 12 blankets out!  I love it, but it can be exhausting trying to keep our tv room from looking like a bomb went off.  Solution?  I have a HUGE basket that I literally throw all the blankets in (no folding required).  Out of sight, out of mind!

via pinterest

7. Get containers to keep snacks organized in the pantry
Between making lunches to send to school, and hungry children and neighbors who are always looking for a snack, I've got a lot of food in my pantry.  It's amazing how much better my pantry feels when everything is put away in pretty, clear containers- it makes it easy to see what I've got on the shelf at any given moment!

How to Organize Your Junk Drawer

Posted by Andie on September 13, 2018

I don't care how organized and put together you are; everybody has a junk drawer!  Am I right?  Your junk drawer may look a lot better than mine, but we've all got 'em.  And the truth of the matter is, most of our junk drawers could probably use a little tender love & care, or maybe even a total refresh.  If it looks like a bomb exploded every time you open your junk drawer, this post is for you!  Here are some simple steps that will help you create an organized, beautiful looking multi-use drawer in 20 minutes or less....

1. Empty everything out
The only way to properly clean out your junk drawer is to dump all of the contents out.  Every last thing.  Once everything is has been unloaded stop for a moment and admire your drawer's emptiness.

2. Dust or vacuum the drawer
Before you start loading items back in, make sure you are starting with a clean slate.  Grab a dust cloth, or a vacuum and clean that puppy out.

3. Throw half of the drawer's contents away
This might be a bit of an exageration, but I'm being pretty serious.  There's a good chance there are lots of loose papers, take-out menus, junk mail, etc that can go straight to the garbage.  Also, if you have items in there that you haven't looked at or used in a year, throw them away immediately- you don't need them!

4. Sort the leftover items into similar groupings
Start making little piles.  Put all of the post-it notes together, all of the pens together, glue sticks, markers, keys, etc.

5. Invest in some organizers
This is CRUCIAL.  Every single time I've ever tried to organize a drawer without organizing bins or aids of some sort, the project has completely failed after a week tops.  They don't have to be fancy or expensive, but they DO have to be functional.  Organizers will be a game changer when it comes to keeping your junk drawer from getting junky!

6. Put it all Together
It might be a junk drawer, but that doesn't mean it can't look pretty!  Here are some examples...

Kid Room Organization

Posted by Alyssa on July 17, 2018

kid room

I didn’t realize this when my daughter was just a baby, but now that she has all of the sudden become a little kid, I’m realizing how hard is is to keep her room organized! We don’t have space for a designated playroom so her room not only has the usual bedroom stuff, it also has all her toys. Somehow she has collected way more toys than I thought she would ever have, and I have no idea where they came from. Does anyone else feel that way? Anyway, I’ve decided it’s time to get serious about organizing her room and have done some research. If you’re interested in kid room organization, here’s what I’ve found out.

organization

via Dwelling and Telling

Before you even start working on an organization system, go through everything that is in your child’s room. Go through toys and get rid of or donate anything that isn’t played with or that is worn or broken. This will get you to the starting point to actually get your kids' room organized.

kid room

via Life With 4 Boys

Obviously, you will need storage options. Make use of bookcases or storage benches to keep less played with things out of sight. Baskets and clear boxes are great options that will (hopefully) keep your kids from dumping everything out just to find one toy.

Label everything! For kids who are too young to read, include pictures. If your kids know where their shoes, toys, shirts, pants, socks, etc. belong they’ll at least know where they should be putting them.

via Style Your Senses

Think like a kid when you start organizing. Get on their level and think through how they play, what they can reach, and what objects they go for most consistently. If you make it easy for them, there won’t be an excuse to not keep things in order.

How have you kept your kids' rooms organized?

How to Organize Recipes

Posted by Alyssa on May 23, 2018

recipe

I don’t know about you, but once I figured out how to organize my recipes meal planning was significantly easier. My biggest problem was that I would find a recipe I would like, make it once, and never remember where I had found it. Finding a way to get organized took me a couple of tries, but I finally found a system that works for me! I thought I’d share the different things I tried and what ultimately worked below.

How to Organize Recipes

recipe binder

via Kalyn Brooke

RECIPE BINDER(S) - If you like ripping recipes out of magazines then having a binder separated into categories will save you the pain of rifling through piles of paper each time you want to find a recipe. Start with one large binder, but if this works for you, you may end up with multiple binders for each category.

PINTEREST - This is one of the most popular ways to organize recipes. Create an account and you’ll be able to make a different board for each recipe type. You can get as detailed in your categories as you want and collect as many recipes as you would like.email

via Mel's Kitchen Cafe

GMAIL - Create files in your inbox to store recipes you find online in. Include a “To Make” file so that you’ll be able to remember recipes you’d like to try out. You’ll be able to keep things sorted neatly, and chances are you already are logged into your email at any given moment.

RECIPE BOX - This is actually what ultimately worked best for me! It was easy to find a space for a small recipe box and you can fit a whole lot of index cards in it. While it does require writing down recipes, I only write down recipes that the whole family enjoyed, which means I have a bunch of family-approved meals on hand.

How have you organized all your recipes?

How to Declutter

Posted by Alyssa on May 13, 2018

declutter

It’s so easy to feel overwhelmed and overcome with clutter. If you’re like me and get frustrated every time you end up digging through a drawer for minutes at a time looking for a pen or fingernail clippers, it might be time to make some changes. When it comes to decluttering, it’s important to remember that everything doesn’t have to be done at once. Make a list of the places you need to declutter and start with the easiest job first. After you’ve completely finished that job, stop! Only do one job at a time so that you have the drive to keep going.

In my quest to figure out the best (and least overwhelming) way to declutter my home, I found an article from Becoming Minimalist that had a couple of good ideas I wanted to share with you below!

How to Declutter

declutter

via Home We're Home

  1. Give away one item a day for a year. It might seem really small and like you aren’t making a lot of progress, but after a year you’ll have gotten rid of 365 things!
  2. Have everyone in your family grab a trash bag and fill it as quickly as possible with either garbage or things to be donated. A whole lot of junk can fit into a garbage bag and if you make it a monthly habit, you’ll quickly reduce the clutter in your house.
  3. Take the 12-12-12 Challenge. Find 12 things you can throw away, 12 things you can donate and 12 things you can put away in their proper place.

There were a lot of ideas and tips in this article you might want to check out if you’re in the mood to declutter your home. How have you decided to declutter your home?

How to Organize Your Closet

Posted by Alyssa on February 20, 2018

closet

Once you know how to organize your closet quickly and efficiently, you’ll be able to keep your things in order! I don’t know about you, but there is something so discouraging about digging through a pile of shoes to find a belt or dumping out an entire drawer to find a pair of matching socks. Below we’ve listed a couple of easy ways to get your closet clean and organized.

How to Organize Your Closet

closet

via Who What Wear

  • First thing’s first. DECLUTTER. You’ve got to get rid of everything and anything you don’t wear, use, or need. If it doesn’t fit or is something you simply don’t wear, donate it. If it is torn or stained, toss it. You’ll be shocked how much easier it is to keep things in order when you don’t have things you don’t need spilling out.
  • Once you’ve cleared out your space and have minimized your closet’s contents, decide where you want everything to go. Things you use the most should be at eye level, things you somewhat use should be on the floor, and your least used items should be stored on the shelf above.

closet

via Unfancy

  • Use boxes, bins, or baskets to store smaller items and keep them separate from everything else. Each item of clothing should have its own hanger or shelf to live on and if you can fit a shoe rack in, do it! Seriously, the more consistent you are in keeping things where they belong, the easier it will be to keep your closet organized.
  • One of the most important things in keeping your closet organized long term is making sure each thing you use is easy to put away. If you have to take the lid off a box every time you want a pair of socks, you’ll probably end up just tossing them into the bottom of your closet. Keep things simple to keep it organized.

So there you go! Simple enough, but why is it always so tricky to keep up? I’ve started cleaning out and organizing my closet every couple of months and it’s helped keep things under control. Have you found any tricks or tips that help you keep your closet organized?
