DIY Cake Stand

Posted by Andie on June 25, 2010

A few weeks ago I went to an outdoor craft market with my sister and sister-in law.  There were dozens of vendors, all with pretty and charming homemade items for sale.  I stumbled upon a tent boasting beautiful cake stands and thought I'd gone to heaven.  Some were vintage, others were more modern, and some were just plain elegant.  They were absolutely lovely.  I almost bought one because after all, we didn't get a cake stand for our wedding and I've been borrowing one from my mother for the past 7 months, so technically I still NEED to get my own.  Right?

After careful examination my practical side got the better of me.  In a renewed effort to become more crafty, creative, and thrifty all at once... I decided I'd forego buying a cake stand and make my own instead.  Move on over, Martha!

I did it.  Trust me, a kindergartner could handle this one.. so easy.

DIRECTIONS:

1. Find a pretty plate

- Any size, shape or color will work.  I wanted a large cake stand, so I used a large plate, but you could use a small plate if you want to hold smaller things like candies, a few cupcakes, jewelry, etc.   You might already have a plate in your cupboard you could use, but if not, most stores sell plates individually.  I found mine at Anthropologie.

2. Find a candlestick

- Any height is great!  I wanted mine on the shorter end, but tall candlesticks work fine too.  I looked all over, and the cutest candlestick I ended up finding was from Dollar Tree!  Don't you love when that happens?

3. Get some glue

- There are probably a number of glues that would work here.  The important thing is that it's heavy duty, and clear drying.  I used Gorilla Glue.

4. Plate + Candlestick + Glue = Cake Stand

Glue a small circle (the size of your candlestick) on the bottom center of your plate, and then hold the candlestick there for a few minutes.  Leave it there to dry completely for the next few hours, and then... Whola!  You've got yourself your very own cake stand.  Display it in your kitchen, or anywhere else in your house for that matter (mine is sitting on a bookshelf) until you need it for a cake!

Here are some pics of mine....

The New 3-D TV.....Cool or Not So Cool?

Posted by Andie on June 11, 2010

The jury is still out for me when it comes to 3-D Television...

'3-D' makes me think of the "Honey I Shrunk the Audience" 3-D Show at Disney World.  Have you seen it?  It's horrifying, and intriguing all at the same time.  It feels like you are on a roller coaster, all the while you have to deal with the fangs of a python, dog slobber, and loose mice running around your feet.  Considering the fact that I'm absolutely petrified of any type of rodent... it wasn't so pleasant for me.  I think I ended up taking the glasses off halfway through the show.  Even in other 3-D shows I've been to sans mice it always feels like there is an explosion going on in my head.  And not in a good way.

So why would I want to watch 3-D in my living room???  Despite my opinions, I decided I needed to see what all of this buzz was about.  If 3-D TVs really are the hot TV of the future I wanted to at least know about them.

So I went to RC Willey and checked out their big 3-D television display.  I never thought I'd say this, but it really surpassed all of my expectations.  It was awesome.  I sat there with my stylish 3-D glasses watching Monsters vs. Aliens... I felt like I was a character in the movie, and I didn't even get a headache.  AWESOME.

I'm still on the fence as to whether I'd like to actually own one.  I guess time will tell.

What do YOU think about the new 3-D TV's?

Dining Room Decorating Ideas

Posted by Andie on June 8, 2010

Is it time to transition your old, outdated dining room into a modern, eclectic masterpiece?  Trying to decide how to decorate your very first dining room?  For whatever reason dining rooms are on your mind, here are a few tips to help you on your journey.....

1. Pick Out The Perfect Table

First, you need to determine what type of table caters to your style, and to the function of the room.  What kind of ambiance do you want your dining room to have?  Is it going to be a formal space, used only on special occasions or when you have company?  Or do you want it to feel more casual and lived in, since you'll be using it on a daily basis?  Traditionally, dark wood finishes add more formality to a room, while lighter finishes and painted finishes create a more casual feel.

Next, you need to think about sizes.  You don't want to overcrowd the room with the table.  How many people will be sitting at it regularly?  Do you have small children? Do you plan on having dinner guests frequently?  Ask yourself these kinds of questions in order to establish what size and shape of dining table will best fit your expectations and needs.

2. Get Creative With Your Chairs

Nowadays, you don't have to purchase a traditional "set" for your dining room, in fact, the old rules of everything having to match in a room don't apply anymore!  Even in a formal dining room the chairs don't have to be the same.  Being eclectic, and reflecting your own unique personality is in!

Look for as many different styles of chairs as you can find and stagger them around your table.  The options are endless- wooden, upholstered, metal, leather, etc!  The more the better!

If you have a casual dining room, there are even more options! Instead of pairing wooden chairs with your casual wood table, try using a couple of rattan chairs for a natural, earthy feel. Lots of people are using a cool bench on one side of the table and chairs on the other for a unique look!  Don't forget to go funky with color!

3. Say Hello to Fabulous Rugs and Colorful Curtains

Incorporating a bright, happy rug is a must!  Getting the right size of rug is essential.  Take a look at the room, and determine what size of area you want to cover.  You don't want something that is wall to wall, but at the same time you want to make sure that all of the furniture you intend to sit on the rug will fit comfortably.  When picking out a rug for under your kitchen table, make sure that when the chairs are untucked, they will still be on the rug.  You don't want any half on, half off business.

Curtains can really make or break a room!  Make sure that your curtains really enhance the overall look and style that you are trying to create.  Don't be afraid to be bold with color and pick out big patterns!  Go big or go home!

The Perfect Kitchen Accessory...

Posted by Andie on June 4, 2010

So my husband and I moved into our new apartment.  It's charming, quaint, and VERY SMALL.  Our kitchen is about the size of a large closet, at best.  Due to virtually no counter top space, our microwave sat on the ground for the first two weeks we were there.  Picture this: every time I wanted to heat up my food (I'm way too impatient to use the stove), I had to hoist the thing up, only to get half of it on the counter while the other half dangled dangerously over the sink.  I don't recommend this method.

I thought that all was lost and we were just going to have to live with our ghetto microwave system forever (or at least the next year or so)... until I discovered this Kitchen Cart.

PERFECTION.

Last night my husband put this baby together, and it felt like Christmas. (for me at least.... I don't think my husband was quite as excited)

Now my microwave, cookbooks, and cookie jar are all have homes.

If your kitchen needs a little more love, then check out these awesome kitchen carts!

Guacamole Recipe

Posted by Andie on June 1, 2010

This new guacamole recipe has changed my life for the better.  I suggest doubling it.  Do try.

Paula's Guacamole

1 ripe Avacado

2 cloves raw garlic, minced

2 tsp lime juice (I used the juice from one lime)

1/8 tsp sea salt

1 small firm tomato, preferably Roma, diced (I made mine without)

1/8 tsp cayenne pepper

onion powder as desired

a bunch of fresh cilantro leaves (optional)

Cut and remove the pit of the avacado.  Peel or scoop out the flesh in a bowl, then mash it.  Add the remaining ingredients to the bowl, and mix.  Enjoy!
