Home Offices

Posted by Andie on August 24, 2011

My husband just started another semester of school and I kid you not, he has 17 books.  Yes, you read that right.  SEVENTEEN.  Here's a picture for proof:

I'm just glad they aren't mine!  Needless to say, we have a slight problem; we are struggling to find a home for these books.  Currently they are sitting in a pile in the corner of our living room so that we don't trip over them.  I don't believe that studying at the kitchen table is going to cut it for much longer.  If our apartment wasn't such a shoe box, we'd go out and buy a desk right this second.  But until then, I'll be putting together ideas for the "perfect" office space....

Ready for School to Start?

Posted by Andie on August 19, 2011

For the past two weeks I've had a pit in my stomach, aching with the realization that soon summer will be a distant, faded memory, and we'll be entrenched in real life again.   I'm going to have to say goodbye to the somewhat carefree reality I've experienced for the past 3 months, and hello to a more rigid, structured, busy, and studious fall.  I'm not sure I'm ready!

But ready or not, time is plowing forward, right?!

In an effort to ease the blow of Back to School costs, RC Willey is now selling this Back to School Backpack for only $6.50.  On top of the fact that this pack is selling for the price of a small sandwich (awesome!), it also comes fully loaded with some basic school supplies.

- 10 pencils

- 10 ballpoint pens

- 6 erasers

- 1 ruler

Aren't you excited?  I want to buy one of these puppies and I don't even have kiddies to send to school!

Also, for Utah residents, buy a backpack and you'll get one free ticket to the Living Planet Aquarium- a perfect last hurrah summer fieldtrip to take your kids on!

P.S. For those of you who don't get as stoked about a backpack purchase as me, there's more!  For the next week, when you spend $399 or more at any RC Willey you can snag this 19" LCD HDTV (perfect for a college dorm room!) PLUS a $50 RC Willey Gift Card for $99!

Happy School Shopping!

Parade of Homes Highlights

Posted by Andie on August 16, 2011

Going to the Parade of Homes with my mom as a child was one of those activities I looked forward to all year.  It ranked right up there with staying up late to watch the Miss America pageant, picking out an outfit for the first day of school, and Christmas vacation!

Yes, I guess I've always been a total design nerd because I really was that excited.

This year, we finally made it to the Parade of Homes the day before it ended.  Here are some of the photos I took- in my opinion, these were some of the best elements I saw....

Funky, modern turquoise front door.

Loving all of the symmetry and straight clean lines.

Lovely mix of vibrant colors and patterns.

Botanical prints and fabrics are definitely in right now!

Very fun mirror display.

Cutest laundry room I've ever seen- the wallpaper was so fabulous!

Again, loving the symmetry of this simple, yet elegant entertainment wall.

I'm also really enjoying the white kitchen cabinets and tile back splash trend.

So classy, minimal and fresh!

Perfect dining room with LOTS of windows and natural light.

It looks like wallpaper, but this entry way wall was actually hand stenciled and painted! Gorgeous!

Very unique idea, but five minutes on this thing would make me sick!

Bright, happy bedding.

Cute, simple way to display a lamp.

Any thoughts?

Like any of this stuff?

Couponing. Boring or Awesome?

Posted by Andie on August 12, 2011

I have a friend that is a coupon genius.  Seriously, the girl gets everything discounted.  I think she's pulled a coupon from her purse at every single cash register she's visited since she was 12 years old.  She literally saves money everywhere she goes it's ridiculous!

Me on the other hand?  Sadly, I didn't get the coupon gene.  In fact, I don't think I've ever used a coupon for anything in my life.  Not that I wouldn't want to, but it never happens because I'm lazy, I don't read the newspaper enough, and I'm too disorganized.  Usually it's failing to locate the scissors to cut out the dang coupon that ruins me.

Where do you fall on the spectrum?  I fee like you're either really into it, or really not.   There is very little middle ground on this issue.

For all of you couponers and non-couponers alike, RC Willey is winding up a huge coupon event this weekend!  With coupons including $100 Off any upholstered sofa, $50 Off any fabric recliner, $200 off refrigerator purchases, and more- there is definitely a coupon for you!  The great part is that you don't even have to cut out the coupon!  Just come into one of our store locations, or shop online and you'll get the same awesome savings!

Happy couponing!

Mini Spaces

Posted by Andie on August 10, 2011

My husband and I just got back from a whirlwind east coast trip!  One of the things that really struck me was the importance of using your living space wisely.  We stayed with some friends in Boston, where owning and renting is definitely not cheap.  While we both live in one bedroom apartments, our friends actually pay three times as much as we do in rent every month!  Oh, how I love Salt Lake City (and the cost of living here)!

Thanks to the high price tag of rent, most people in big cities end up living in tiny apartments.  While adjusting to life in a small space would have it's obvious drawbacks, it seems it would also have some pretty great benefits!  Learning to a) live minimally, b) avoid buying things you don't absolutely need, and c) getting rid of junk asap are just a few!

Our friends introduced us to this video, and I was totally blown away!  This man in Spain has made the most incredible use of a 258 square foot apartment!  You've got to watch to believe it!

Check out his house tour!

Are you using your space wisely?

City Kids Go Camping

Posted by David on August 5, 2011

Last weekend, my husband and I, along with my siblings and their spouses, went camping.  Well, to state it correctly, we attempted to go camping.  We are total amateurs (none of us had actually been in over 4 years), but we thought it'd be fun to go sleep in the wild for a night.

We packed everything into our cars, and set out late Friday afternoon to find the perfect plot of ground to lay our heads.  We drove for about an hour to a little camp site we'd heard about, but once we got there we were disappointed.  The place looked like a baseball park, complete with swimming pools, laundry facilities, and manicured grass.  We were looking for something a little more remote (after all, we don't camp that often), so we switched directions and kept driving.

Well, long story short, we drove over the river, through woods and valleys, and up mountains and hills....... and every single campsite we found was FULL to capacity.  Talk about a let down!  On top of that, we were surrounded by National Park land so exploring and finding our own spot was strictly forbidden.  I had no idea camping was so hard!  All I wanted to do was sleep outside, was that too much to ask?  Maybe it's a sign I should just stick to hotels.....

After 4.5 hours of driving, we ended up back where we started..... in my parent's backyard.

Yeah.  Bummer.

Luckily, they have a fire pit, so we roasted our hot dogs and marshmallows, told riddles and stories around the camp fire, then slept in our sleeping bags on the grass.  I have mosquito bites all over my body to prove it.

While I consider myself the epitome of "ghetto" camper, during our little jaunt, I was impressed and surprised at some of the high-tech, beautiful campers out there!  Some of the campers I saw were like second homes!  Here's what I'm talking about....

Does your camper/tent look like these?

Things You Shouldn't Have to Pay for PLUS Giveaway!

Posted by Andie on August 3, 2011

There are few things I've looked forward to as long and painstakingly as getting my drivers license.  My birthday was at the very end of the school year and so consequentially I was the last one out of my friends to drive.  By the time I finally turned sixteen, I managed to fail my first driving test (I swear, the guy was a jerk and had an agenda) which made things even worse.  My little world crumbled around me for a day or two, but I prevailed!  Once I passed the test, got my license, and had the keys to a Buick in my hands (yes, it was a total grandpa car), I was confident life couldn't get any better.

That is, until I had to fill up the car with gas for the first time.

I remember standing slumped over at the gas pump, staring in disbelief as the numbers went up, up, up, up!  It cost eighteen dollars back then to fill up my whole car.  While it seems like petty cash compared to gas prices nowadays, 18 bucks was a lot for my sixteen year old self!  I worked at a tanning salon for crying out loud! I was shocked, mortified, and just plain confused.  Why was gas so expensive anyway?

And that's when it hit me.  Driving was totally over-rated.

Over the years I've realized there are certain things in life that no matter how badly you need them, you never want to fork out the dough to pay for them.   The list includes, but is not limited to:

paying for gas!

getting new tires

ALL car problems in general

broken air conditioners/ heating systems

cleaning supplies

medical bills

parking

freezers

ATM fees

airline baggage fees

college textbooks

vacuums

Who's with me??  Anyone else hate paying for these things?

Well, you're in luck if you do!  While we don't have mechanics on site to fix your cars, and we can't pay your medical bills or abolish ATM fees, we are having a Frigidaire Freezer Giveaway!  You might love spending $650 on a nice freezer, but if you're like me, you could probably find a few other things you'd rather buy first- which is why this is the perfect giveaway!

Three lucky winners will win a white-on-white 16.7 cu. ft. Capacity Upright Freezer!  Don't you think this freezer could really improve your frozen food situation?  Man, I wouldn't know what to do with all this space!  What a beautiful thing!  Make sure you enter our Frigidaire Freezer contest page by Friday, August 5th for a chance to win!
