Fall 2015 Pantone Color Predictions

With tomorrow being the first official day of fall, I'm jumping in with both feet!  In my opinion there is nothing better than fall home decor, food, and fashion!  The phrase "fall color palette" has traditionally been fairly simple to interpret.  Browns, blacks, greys, beiges, and creams, (plus maybe throw in a burnt orange for halloween) have ruled all the land.  But now, The Pantone Institute, the world's leading authority on color, is changing all that.  While neutrals will always be a major player when it comes to fashion and interior design (especially in the colder months), this year fall is all about COLOR!

The Pantone Institute has predicted the top 10 Colors for Fall 2015.  I was so surprised at all of the warm, bold colors they picked!  From amethyst orchid, to biscay bay--- I'm really loving the combination of cheerful color and earthy neutrals.  Keep scrolling for some photos to get you inspired!  Come on fall, I'm so ready for you!

Trend Alert Cool Tilevia lonny mag

It's no secret-- tile everything is definitely on point right now! Statement tile floors and walls have been making big waves in the design community this year.  The current tile trend is all about creating a little shock factor!  Look for happy & bold colors (you can't go wrong with funky hand painted tiles either), or simply lay everyday tile in a cool and unexpected arrangment.  I for one, am loving all of the great patterns I've been seeing!  If you want some major inspiration, check out Lonny Magazine's new hashtag #floorcore on instagram for some amazing tiled floors from all around the world.  And now, for some of my favorite tiled surfaces as of late......

iphone 6s features

Apple also announced today the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus, the most advanced smartphones in the world featuring the A9 chip. It's 70% faster than the A8 chip for CPU processes and 90% faster for graphics processes. The phones are built out of a custom Apple aluminum and will come in 4 finishes: Silver, Gold, Space Gray, Rose Gold.

iPhone Live Photo

These iPhones will have 3D touch - a new version of multi-touch giving you a force push that pops up new shortcuts in iOS9. Push a written address and watch a map pop up or click a photograph in Live Photo and watch it come to life! That's right with Live Photo your photographs actually record 1.5 seconds before and after your photo giving you mini-videos in every picture. Want to browse your email? Press on a message and see a preview without having to open the whole email. In maps you can use 3D touch to quickly drop a pin or peek in on a location and see hours of operation. This will be one of those features that will easily integrate into how you want to work saving you time and effort. Instagram, Facebook and WeChat have already started developing common shortcuts for this feature as have games such as Warhammer 40k: Freeblade.

iphone 12mp camera

These phones come with a 12MP iSight camera. It has faster auto-focus, less noise, incredible detail and better color. You can also take massive 63MP panoramas. On top of this the new iPhones will shoot 4K video. Every frame will have 8 million pixels. You can then edit it in iMovie directly on your iPhone. And on the front side of your iPhone 6s you get the 5MP facetime HD camera. This means better FaceTime and better selfies. The true-tone flash is recreated on the front of the phone's display in the form of the Retina Flash. Essentially the display lights up 3x brighter to create a flash for front facing photos.

Wireless speed is 2X faster on LTE and Wi-Fi is up to 2X as fast as well. The new iPhone 6s comes with a second generation touch sensor as well which is much faster. There will be a host of new accessories for the iPhone 6s as well including these cool charging cradles.

Coming Soon - the New Apple TV

Posted by Kerry on September 9, 2015

Apple TV Siri

With the new Apple TV (64bit A8 chip - 32GB $149 64GB $199) you can now personalize your tv experience so it’s better than ever before. It starts with a revolutionary remote. The remote has a glass touch surface & Siri voice activation button. It’s built on a modern TVOS operating system which allows developers to create apps & games for your Apple TV. Let’s start with the Siri voice activation.

Siri is very smart on this device so you can ask questions like “Show me funny TV shows” or get more detailed such as “Show me the Modern Family episode with Ed Norton in it.” Once you find what you are looking for you can tap your remote and a details page pops up with seasons, episodes & which streaming service your program is available on: hulu, Netflix, HBO, Showtime, iTunes. If you miss something in a show you can ask Siri “What did she say?” and Siri will rewind 15 seconds and turn on closed captioning so you never miss a good line. Or you can just ask Siri to “Skip ahead 7 minutes” and voila, she will do that! Other Siri questions can be “Find me all movies by the Cohen Brothers” or “show me movies with a G rating.” There is also real-time information to be accessed by Siri while watching a program for instance you can ask Siri “Who’s winning the Utah Jazz game?” and Siri will pop up the live score at the bottom of the screen or you can ask Siri “Who stars in this?” and a pop up will show cast names and pictures or “What’s the weather like in Sacramento?” and real time weather will display at the bottom of the screen!

New Apple TV Remote

The touch remote makes moving through menus and programs easier than ever. For those of you who have an Apple TV right now you know fast-forwarding can be a serious challenge and this new remote seems to change that. You can also swipe down for program info like the cast in the middle of a program. And the best part is the remote runs off of bluetooth so it doesn’t matter where you point it! The remote will also control your tv volume, power & a/v receiver, eliminating the need for those extra remotes and it will last 3 months on a single charge and you can charge it with the Apple Lightning connector.

New Apple TV Games

The app store will be an awesome space as developers migrate more websites and apps to your tv. A few you can count on will be Netflix, HBO NOW, hulu, as well as games like Guitar Hero, Disney Infinity, kids apps, fitness apps, comic book apps, airbnb, and zillow. You will also be able to play multiplayer games in your home using iPhones or iPod touches as extra remotes! And be prepared to see some of your favorite retailers move their product catalog onto your tv where you can browse and buy straight from your couch. If you are a baseball fan you’ll love the MLB.com app for Apple TV. You’ll be able to see the full MLB.COM schedule, swipe right for video highlights and it’s all streamed at 60fps. With one click of your remote you can pull up an amazing amount of live stats. You can also receive pop up notifications about your favorite teams and you can watch both games at the same time in split screen!

New Apple TV Screen Savers

As an extra bonus, when your Apple TV isn’t being used there are some beautiful high-def slow-motion video screen savers that play based on time of day - so night screen savers at night and day screensaver by day. I currently run an Apple TV in my living room and I love it. With the new one coming out I won’t be chucking my old one by any means. It’s an easy to use and capable product, so I will just move it to a guest room and upgrade my living room experience. If you are new to streaming check out both. There is a big price difference so maybe you will opt for the older model at first to get your feet wet and see if this new way of watching tv is for you.

Coming soon from Apple - iPad Pro

Posted by Kerry on September 9, 2015

ipad pro size

In today's Apple Event, Apple announced the iPad Pro, the next level of iPad for your home or office. The iPad Pro is the most capable and powerful iPad ever created by Apple. It has a huge 12.9" diagonal screen, and a fullsize digital keyboard - but just in case you don't like typing on a screen Apple is releasing the Smart Keyboard ($169), a detachable physical keyboard that plugs directly into the iPad Pro via a new connector system.

The Apple iPad Pro has a 2732 x 2048 resolution which adds up to 5.6 million pixels. This is more pixels than a 15" MacBook Pro with Retina Display meaning it is even more crisp and beautiful than before. This display has a variable refresh rate which will save you energy while watching a movie and its graphic processor is 2x faster than before, making gaming even more immersive.

It has a super sensitive multi-touch display that allows touch and pressure input which will give you new gestures as well as a superior drawing and painting experience. The Apple iPad Pro also has a 4-speaker audio system that auto-balances depending on how you are holding it. You can easily connect accessories through it's new connector system which transfers power as well as data bi-directionally.

A9x-stats

The Apple iPad Pro will offer desktop-class performance, an 8-megapixel camera, 10 hours of battery power and the A9x chip. It will be available in silver, gold, and space grey and will retail at $799 with 32gb memory and $949 with 128 gb of memory.

Apple Pencil

Apple iPad Pro Microsoft Office

As an example of how fast the Apple iPad Pro is, you can edit 3 streams of 4K video in iMovie at once or run a powerful program such as AutoCad 360. And of course when you get done you can fire up your favorite film or tv show and enjoy a more immersive experience with the massive screen. You can also run two programs side by side such as Microsoft Word and PowerPoint and if you are graphically inclined you might be interested in the new Apple Pencil ($99). The Apple Pencil has position, force & tilt and offers an onscreen ruler. It will work amazingly with sketching programs, Photoshop, and even Microsoft Powerpoint, giving you an even more realistic drawing or painting experience. The system scans the pencil's movements twice as often as your finger giving you precise touchpoints and pressure. Even if you aren't an artist, this tool can come in handy for drawing quick sketches in the new Notes app or checking documents and adding notes in the sidebar.

The only other upgrade to the iPad lineup is the iPad mini 4. It will pack all the features and power of the iPad Air 2 into the mini package.

3 Questions to Ask Yourself When Buying Vacation Souvenirs.....

Posted by Andie on September 2, 2015

via my summer vacation to the Chesapeake Bay, Maryland (no filter!)

September is here, and summer vacations are winding down or in my case, over. Which brings up a topic I'd like your input on.  How many times have you bought something totally ridiculous on vacation because you felt obligated to bring home a souvenir?  It's embarassing how much money I've spent over the years on pure crap.  I can't even begin to tell you how many little silver spoons (I'm still not sure how I got sucked into collecting these as a kid-- was this an actual thing??), hideous t-shirts, beanie babies, whiskey glasses (the funniest part about this one is that I don't even drink), and dumb little trinkets I have bought, all in the name of 'remembering' my vacation.

So why do we do it?  What possesses us to spend hard earned money on junk? Here are three questions you should ask yourself when you're mulling over a possible vacation souvenir purchase:

1. Would I buy this item at home? Is this something you would really put money into if you were home, or is it an impulse buy simply because you're on vacation?  It's easy to blow through your money when you're in spending mode on things that are just going to end up in the "donate" pile in a few months.   If it's useless, overpriced junk (or even junk that's on sale!) put it back on the shelf and walk away.

2. Is buying this item practical?  Does it make sense to buy it?  Remember, just because it's "cool" or interesting doesn't mean you'll have any use for it once you're home living real life.  I learned the hard way that buying full size wooden clogs from Holland (not wearable, mind you) wasn't the smartest purchase I've ever made.  Nor did it help matters that they took up a whole lot of precious pounds in my suitcase on the way home! Don't make this same kind of mistake.

3. Will I actually display/or wear this item? This is possibly the most important question you can ask yourself.  Sometimes on vacation you splurge on something and it ends up being a fantastic statement piece in your home!  Sadly, this doesn't always happen though. You need to really think about the end game- will you actually display/wear it for years to come or is it going to end up tucked away in a closet in your basement (only because you feel too guilty to throw it away)?  Truthfully, most pieces of clothing (especially the native kind typical to the area I visited) I've purchased on vacation have ended up in my Halloween costume bin.  Probably not worth it.  Unless of course you're really into Halloween.

Now before you think I'm completely anti vacation souvenir...... quite the contrary! Vacations are the perfect place to find and collect beautiful and interesting pieces, (that none of your friends or neighbors have!) to grace your home.  It might take a little more work (I dare say you'll have to look past the hotel gift shop), but it's worth it in the end. Also, you don't have to spend loads of money.  Sometimes the quirikiest pieces are relatively cheap!  So, bottom line?  Be thoughtful and conscious about your vacation purchases.  Your house will be full of interesting conversation starters,  you'll be surrounded by happy vacation memories, and you'll keep your "donate" pile to a minimum!

Here are a few of my favorite things around my house that I've collected from some of my (and family members') travels.....

What are your favorite items in your home that you've picked up on travels?
I'd love to hear what your secrets are!!
