Polyaspartic Flooring FAQ
Choosing between epoxy and polyaspartic flooring for your garage comes down to what's most important to you. Epoxy is a budget-friendly, durable, chemical-resistant option, perfect for a busy garage. It allows you to customize the look to your taste, but it does take a while to dry and cure thoroughly. It's also not the best choice if your garage gets a lot of sunlight, as it can fade or yellow over time. Epoxy also doesn't do well in extreme temperatures, making application timing crucial.
Polyaspartic flooring dries fast, so you won't have to wait long to use your garage again. It's tough, resists stains, and won't lose its color in the sun. However, all these benefits come at a higher cost.
Polyaspartic is highly durable but can still get scratched if you drag heavy objects across it. If you're moving items such as furniture, appliances, or equipment, place protective pads to prevent damaging your floor.
During the installation process, polyaspartic releases strong chemicals and smells. When resins like polyaspartic coatings are used in projects, they can give off a smell because of chemicals called "volatile organic compounds" (VOCs) that get into the air. Polyaspartic coatings have low levels of VOCs, meaning they're less smelly and better for the environment than many other coatings.
However, the smell may still irritate your eyes, nose, and throat or cause headaches and dizziness.
It's not toxic once fully cured, but the installation process can be risky, especially for those with respiratory issues, allergies, or pets.
That's why it's better to have professionals handle the installation-they know how to manage these risks and use the proper equipment.
Polyaspartic flooring dries quickly, allowing light foot traffic within 6-8 hours. For heavier traffic, it's ready in about 8-12 hours, making it convenient for busy spaces. You can even drive and park your vehicle on it as soon as 24 hours after installation. However, limiting this to one vehicle for up to 12 hours at a time is recommended.
The entire curing process varies, taking anywhere from 5-10 days, depending on the temperature. Warmer conditions speed up the curing, while cooler temperatures may slow it down.
Each flooring project is unique. Depending on the scope and material, your project time may vary. Almost all carpet jobs are done in 1 day. Hard surfaces may take 2-3 days from start to finish.
Maintaining this flooring type is straightforward. Use a mild soap solution for regular cleaning and follow the manufacturer's guidelines for any tough debris.
Products like Windex with ammonia or vinegar are effective against hard water stains and grime. Steer clear of strong detergents, acids, or alkaline cleaners, as they will harm the floor coating.
A polyaspartic floor typically lasts between 10 and 25 years, but the exact time depends on a few things. How much wear and tear and the installation process play a big part.
Professional installation and taking good care of it through regular cleaning will help extend its life. So, while the lifespan can vary, the proper installation and maintenance can push it towards the longer end of the scale.
