Blender Tutorials

Posted by Alyssa on July 10, 2018

blender

If you have a blender that is collecting dust in your cupboard, you are not alone! It’s hard to think outside of the milkshake/smoothie zone and figure out ways to really make use of your blender. This is something that I, admittedly, am not very good at so I spent some time looking up different ways to use a blender and thought I’d share.

Blender Tutorials

Blender Tips

  • Make sure your lid is on firmly and that you keep your hand on the top of the container lid while the blender is going.
  • If the blender seems like it’s having a hard time working, add a little liquid to help loosen up whatever you’re mixing.
  • Always make sure the blender has completely stopped before you take off the lid.
  • Right after you use the blender, put a little bit of warm water and dish detergent in the jar and pulse to make cleaning your blender easier.
  • If you are blending something hot, leave the cap off for steam to escape and start at the lowest speed.
  • Always leave room for expansion. You shouldn’t fill your blender all the way up before you start mixing.

TRY MAKING THESE IN YOUR BLENDER!

Pancake or Waffle Mix

Make smooth pancake or waffle batter in seconds by tossing it in your blender. Not only will your batter be clump-free, you’ll be able to perfectly measure out and pour the mix straight out of the blender.

Creamy Soup

If you like smooth texture in your soup, toss it in the blender after it’s cooked to get the texture you want. Obviously, you’ll want to let your soup cool down a little bit before you blend it to avoid burns or a literal hot mess.

Sauces

If you’ like to make your own sauce (of any kind, really!) try skipping the saucepan and mix everything in your blender. All the spices and flavors will be mixed evenly throughout the sauce and you’ll minimize how much chopping you have to do by hand.

Whipped Cream

Pour in your whipped cream, turn on the blender, and watch it fluff up into the perfect consistency.

How to Buy a Water Heater

Posted by Alyssa on July 9, 2018

water heater

Your water heater is most likely something you haven’t given a second thought, but the moment you turn on the water hoping for a hot shower and nothing but cold water comes out, you’ll definitely start looking into how to buy a water heater. If you’re in the market for a new water heater or just want to be prepared for the day yours may break, we’ve put together some information to help you make purchasing your water heater an easy process.

How to Buy a Water Heater

BEFORE YOU BUY

Measure Your Space

If you are changing out an older water heater for a new one, you need to make sure you measure your space carefully. Water heaters come in a variety of heights and diameters, even if the new water heater has the same tank size as the old one. Newer water heaters also have more insulation than older water heaters, which could change the size and shape.

Determine Tank Size

Generally speaking, you’ll need a larger tank with a larger household. Most water heaters are sold based on how many gallons they hold, but more important than that is the first-hour rating (FHR) for storage-tank water heaters and gallons-per-minute rating (GPM) for tankless water heaters. The FHR and the GPM tell how much hot water the water heater can deliver over a set period of time.

Determine Your Fuel Type

Before you buy your water heater you need to know what fuel source your home has. Water heaters come in electric, gas or propane,  or as a hybrid. If you want a gas water heater but don’t have a gas line going into your home where the water heater will be stored, make sure you consider the costs that will be associated with running a gas line.

TYPES OF WATER HEATERS

Storage Tank Water Heater

This is the most common type of water heater. An insulated tank heats and then holds water until it is needed. Storage tank water heaters come in electric, propane, and natural gas models. Natural gas models use less energy and are cheaper to run than electric water heaters, but cost more upfront.

Tankless Water Heater

Unlike the storage tank water heaters, tankless water heaters heat water using heating coils as the water flows through it. These are much more energy efficient options, but they can run out of hot water during heavy usage. For example, if you run a shower and the dishwasher simultaneously the water heater may have a hard time keeping up with demand. These are good for residences that are occupied part-time.

Heat Pump (Hybrid) Water Heater

These are some of the most energy-efficient water heater options available - they use 60% less energy than standard electric water heaters. A heat pump water heater captures the heat from the air and transfers it to the water. These heaters don’t work well in cold areas and need to be kept in an area that stays between 40-90 degrees. You’ll also need a drain nearby for the condensation that forms on these heaters.

If you have more questions about purchasing a water heater, make sure you talk to a professional and don’t forget to check out the water heater options available at RC Willey.

Kitchen Design Trends 2018

Posted by Andie on July 8, 2018

For the past couple of months I have been living & breathing kitchens.  I've even been dreaming about kitchens!  It's literally all I can think about.  We just bought a fixer upper last month, and we've been working to renovate and create our dream kitchen (at least for now:)  We did all of the demolition ourselves, and have been working tirelessly on the design as well.  There are 6 hot kitchen trends right now that I've been seeing EVERYWHERE that you need to know about....

1. Slabs of Stone In Place of Tile Backsplashes
This is huge.  And everywhere.  And super pricey.  But lovely!!  Personally, I love a good tile backsplash that adds personality and uniqueness to a kitchen, so this isn't really for me- but I do like the classic, clean look.

via Amber Interiors

2. Built-In, or Integrated Sinks
Again, this isn't necessarily my thing, but it's worth talking about.  Sinks that are built directly into the slab of stone used as the countertop are making their way into kitchens.  It's very modern, and simple.

via Amber Interiors

3. Hidden Hoods
Huge, statement making hoods have been the hot ticket kitchen item for the past few years, but it seems the trend is backtracking a bit from oversized and flamboyant to understated, and inconspicuous.  Hidden hoods are making a comeback in a big way.

4. Marble
There will always be a place for marble in design, but marble is especially at the forefront right now.  Marble counters, backsplashes, islands- you name it!  You have to remember that marble is extremely high maintenance, but if it works for your lifestyle it is very beautiful.

via Amber Interiors

5. Large, functional kitchen Islands- sometimes two!
Large islands aren't going anywhere.  In fact, they are just getting more and more tripped out!  The latest and greatest islands boast sinks, storage, seating, and lots of other bells and whistles!  The island is the real hub of the kitchen, and people are putting a lot of thought into making their islands not only lovely, but functional.  We are also seeing many kitchens (that have the space) opting for two islands!!

6. Multiple Appliances (ovens, dishwashers, sinks, fridges)
Gone are the days where kitchens had one oven, one fridge, one dishwasher, and one sink.  More and more homeowners are putting in multiple appliances (see the three, yes THREE wall ovens below!) to make entertaining, and cooking in general, more convenient.  Check out RC Willey's appliance selection to help you get your dream kitchen!

Summer Party Ideas

Posted by Alyssa on July 7, 2018

party

Summer is the perfect time to throw a party! Not only can you barbeque something delicious, you can stay out later and enjoy a warm summer evening with your friends and family. While a simple throw together party is always fun, don’t limit yourself to just that. With some of these summer party ideas, you’ll be able to throw a party no one will forget any time soon.

lighting

Lighting definitely sets the mood and whether you have a small group or a large one, stringing up lights will make your party feel even more festive. If you have a fire pit and it isn’t too hot, set up chairs and light a fire.

Being outside makes the most sense for a summer party, but if you have bug spray and sunscreen available to your guests you’ll make sure everyone is bite-free and burn-free.

summer party

Create a seating area for your guests. If you don’t have a comfortable seating area for everyone, toss out blankets and some cushions. Your guests will be happy to lounge as long as you yourself set the example!

Obviously, food and drinks are important to have for your guests, but see if you can make them a little more special. Check out some of these recipes and toss a little fruit into your water to flavor it.

room

Set out lawn games like badminton, croquet, or bocce ball and make sure they are easily accessible. It’s much easier to start a conversation with someone if you’re engaged in an activity and your guests will stay longer if there are fun activities to do.

Depending on your guest list, you’ll want to have something set out for the kids to do. Bubbles, outdoor toys, or a bean bag toss will keep not just the kids happy but their parents too.

What are some of your ideas for summer parties?

Setting Up A Home Office

Posted by Alyssa on July 3, 2018

home office

There are some major benefits of working from home. Not only are you able to have a more flexible schedule while working from the comfort of your own home, but your commute is just a walk down the hallway! Setting up a home office may seem like an easy task, but there are some basic things you should keep in mind before you throw a desk in a corner and call it a workspace. If you want to set up a home office, we have some tips for you.

Setting Up A Home Office

Before you start setting up your home office, make a list of everything you need in your workspace. One of the luxuries of creating your own home office is that you can personalize it to exactly what will work for you. Take the time to seriously think through how you work and what would make your work day as comfortable as possible.

via House Beautiful

Once you’ve made your list of everything you need, find a space to designate as your office. If you have an extra room that you can section off and make a private space, do it. A room with a door and natural lighting is an ideal choice, but not every home has an extra room available to turn into an office. In that case, you may need to find an isolated corner that you can transform into a small office.

Invest in the right equipment. If you have slow internet, a broken printer or scanner, or an uncomfortable chair you’ll be frustrated every day. Take the time to outfit your office with a desk that will actually work for your needs and test out different office chairs to find one that is comfortable for you.

Clutter and junk will have a negative effect on how you work and stay organized. One of the best ways to stay on top of a mess is to make sure you have enough storage and to start off organized. Bookshelves, filing cabinets, and desks with drawers will help your office stay nice and neat.

Lighting is important not only for your eyes but also your mood. Working in a dim space can be depressing and unappealing, so install enough lighting and bring in both desk lamps and floor lamps.

Your home office should be somewhere you want to work and somewhere appealing to spend your time. Bring some of your personality into your workspace with fun accessories and personal items, but be careful. Avoid cluttering up your office and make sure you remember that this is a place to work, not to hang out.

How have you set up your home office?

Kitchens with Islands

Posted by Alyssa on June 30, 2018

kitchen

If there were one thing I would snap my fingers and change in my house, it would be putting an island in my kitchen. Growing up, the kitchen island was a place we would gather to eat breakfast, lunch, prepare meals, do homework - pretty much everything! Some of my best memories come from sitting around the kitchen island.

If you are interested in remodeling your kitchen and are looking for some inspiration, I’ve gathered some pictures of kitchens with islands to share!
