How to Clean Wood Floors

Posted by Alyssa on July 3, 2017

wood floors

Hardwood floors are a sought after feature in homes, and knowing how to clean wood floors will keep them looking nicer longer. Wood floors are different than other flooring types like laminate or tile - they need a little extra love and care to keep them in good shape. There are a few things you should be doing for your wood floors that we’ve listed below.

Get rid of any dirt or debris on the floors frequently - at least once a week or more for more high traffic areas. Because wood scratches more easily than other flooring types it’s important to remove anything that may scratch the floor. Use a dust mop, broom, or vacuum to do this. If using a vacuum, make sure the it doesn’t have a beater bar, which may damage your floors.

Spot clean your floors for small messes. You’ll only want to mop your entire floor about once a month. When mopping the floors, make sure you are wringing out your mop so that it is damp, not wet. Too much water on the floors can warp and damage the wood.

Never leave standing water on your floors. It can help to use a spray bottle and lightly mist the area you are going to be mopping to avoid using excess water. If water is left behind after mopping, wipe it up with a dry towel as soon as possible.

Now that you know how to clean wood floors, where do you want to put in hardwood flooring?

Studio Apartment Layout

Posted by Alyssa on July 2, 2017

studio apartment

Figuring out a studio apartment layout that is functional and still aesthetically pleasing can be difficult. When you live in an apartment with only one main room, finding a place for your bed, couch, desk, and table can be overwhelming. If you’re in the process of deciding on a studio apartment layout, these tips and hints below will help you make the most of your space.

Think about everything you know and try to visualize where it will go before you start placing your furniture. It will save you a lot of heavy lifting later on!

Start with the biggest items first. This will most likely end up being your bed. Decide where you want to have your sleeping area and what makes the most sense for when you have guests over.

Your entertaining area should be closer to the door than your sleeping area unless you want all your guests to walk past your bed to get to the couch whenever they come to visit.

Be creative about how you can use “walls” to separate spaces in your room. Screens, bookshelves, or curtains will help separate areas. You could also float your couch or use different area rugs for a more subtle room divider.

Find furniture that will double as storage so you won’t feel overwhelmed with your belongings.

5 Questions With At Home With Ashley

RC Willey Blogger Profile Picture - Kerry Posted by Kerry on June 30, 2017

at home with ashley blog
Ashley Wilson is runs a very popular design blog and instagram account under the name At Home With Ashley. We have worked with her on a few occasions and we were very excited to help her get a range for her new kitchen redesign. We sat down with Ashley after she finished her kitchen and asked a few questions.

RCW: When did you first know you were interested in home decor?

AW: When I was in the 3rd grade I made a little home out of cardboard and wallpaper scraps. My cousin saw it and said "Ashley should be an Interior Designer!" So I decided right there and then that is what I would be! I went to college at FIDM for Interior Design and have loved it ever since.

RCW: At the time of this interview you have 85,000 followers on Instagram! How long have you been doing it and what do you attribute your success to?

AW: I started @athomewithashley on Instagram in September of 2015. It was tricky at first to figure out my look and find my viewers. I practiced my photography while I redid my house. Both got better. The better my images got, the more people responded. I like sharing tips for decorating your house so I think my readers like learning something too.

RCW: What are some simple design tips that everyone can benefit from?

AW: Group your accessories in a series of three objects - this is very pleasing to the eye. Fresh flowers and lit candles make every house prettier. I share a bunch of my design tips in my free ebook.  Download At Home With Ashley's ebook Styling School here

RCW: Who inspires you in the world of design?

AW: Right now I am super inspired by the Salt Lake designers Studio McGee. They designed a local parade home and it was so fun to walk through! They are masters of neutral textures and scale. Plus they share all of their work on their Instagram and blog so it's easy to get daily inspiration.

RCW: So how are you liking your new range from RC Willey? What made you choose this particular range and have you baked anything yet?

AW: I chose this range because I wanted a stainless steel look that wasn't too expensive. I love (LOVE) the convection feature. Maybe it's because I was cooking on a stove from 1970 before, but this one cooks so much faster and evenly. I've made cookies and countless dinners. Mashed potatoes are our favorite so I've made those at least 5 times.

Best Beach Reads

Posted by Alyssa on June 29, 2017

beach rads

Whether you're going on a trip this summer or are lounging by the pool at home, finding the best beach reads is the key to the perfect summer! Check out our list of five books you may want to pack next to your sunscreen on your next outing.

Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn- This is an older book, so it’s possible you’ve read it or heard of it, but there’s nothing like a good thriller to read in the summer time. When Amy goes missing, her husband Nick is the number one suspect and throughout the investigation, you learn more and more about the couple, their marriage, and whatever crime took place. This is the type of book with a twist at the end that will make you think about it over and over again.

Attachments by Rainbow Rowell- My friend just finished this book and said that she felt like she was reading the book equivalent of a Rom-Com. This is a light-hearted, easy read set in 1999 about a man named Lincoln who is hired to be an internet security monitor of a newspaper - a nice of way of saying he’s the guy who reads the staff’s emails to make sure they aren’t doing anything personal at work. When Lincoln comes across Beth's and Jennifer’s emails, he knows he needs to report them for sending personal emails back and forth, but he can’t help but get invested in their lives.

The Curious Charms of Arthur Pepper by Phaedra Patrick - Arthur has been a widower for a year when he finally decides to clean out his wife Miriam’s closet. In the closet, he finds a charm bracelet he’s never seen before. Suddenly filled with the desire to know where this bracelet came from and why his wife never showed it to him, Arthur goes on an adventure that takes him all over the world. Not only does Arthur learn about his wife’s past, he learns about himself and the new life he wants to live.

Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty - There is a mystery at the very beginning of this book - someone has died at a school PTA event and it might not have been an accident. Madeline, Celeste, and Jane are the central figures of this novel and the story revolves around their friendship and individual lives. As they navigate their personal lives, the lives of their children, and their friendship, we get clues of who has died and how it happened. This book is a funny, scary, and relatable mystery with an ending that is completely satisfying.

Dark Matter by Blake Crouch - If science-fiction is your thing, this is a quick read that will leave you thinking. Jason Dessen last remembers being hit on the head and when he wakes up, he’s in a completely different world. Everything looks the same, but instead of being a physics professor he is a celebrated genius who has created something incredible. Jason can remember his wife and son, but they don’t exist in the same way they did before he was knocked unconscious. Jason is left confused and trying to find his way back to his life. Throughout his journey, he realizes the importance of decisions and how small choices build our lives.

What are the best beach reads you've found this summer?

Favorite Accessories

Posted by Alyssa on June 26, 2017

accessories

I am not the type of person who likes clutter. In fact, I have made it a goal to have as few flat surfaces in our house as possible because it seems to me if you have a flat space, you end up putting something on it. I am, however, a big fan of a well-placed accessory. Incorporating unique, interesting accessories here and there throughout your house makes things more interesting and is a great conversation piece. If you’ve been looking for some accessories to add interest in your home, check out some of my favorites below.
