How to Make Faux Plants Look Real
As much as I would love to say that I have beautiful, live, thriving plants in every room of my home....... I can't, because it would be a big lie. I mean, it's a lot of work for me to keep four children alive, let alone greenery! I can handle a couple of low maintenance plants, but taking on any more would be a bit too abitious for me at this point in my life. I love the look and feel of greenery and plants in a home though, and so recently I've started embracing mixing faux trees and plants in with the real ones. It turns out, there acutually some great and realistic looking faux plants out there! Here are three ways to fool your visitors into thinking your faux plants are real......
1. Be selective
When purchasing faux plants, make sure you do so with a discerning eye, because not all faux plants and trees are created equally! Plastic is usually more realistic looking than silk these days. The goal is to find something that looks natural (stay away from super glossy, fake dew on the branches, etc). Compare faux greenery with photos of the real thing when shopping for additional help.
2. "Plant" it in a natural setting
Doing little things when it comes to display will go a long way in helping your plant look real. For starters, take it out of the pot that it came in, and pop it in a beautiful, expensive looking pot or basket. Then, cover the whole thing with real soil or garden rocks. If it looks like it's sprouting from real dirt, people will probably assume it's a living plant! Also, cutting and bending stems to varying lengths is always a good idea.
3. Place it in a sunny spot in your home
Try to think realistically here. If you don't want people to know your plant is fake, dont' put it in a dark bathroom or corner of the house that never sees sunlight! Place faux plants where live plants would actually thrive in your home. Also, make sure you keep it clean! Faux plants love collecting dust, so be vigilent about using a feather duster every couple of weeks or so.

Styrofoam Recyling
Did you know that in most places do not accept Styrofoam in your curbside recycling bins? Expanded polystyrene, or Styrofoam, seems everywhere but it’s a product that can’t be recycled. This can be a huge problem because not only can you not recycle Styrofoam, it isn’t biodegradable so all those cups, packing peanuts, and take out carriers we interact with every day just end up sitting in the landfill. While most food containers can’t be reused, there are ways to reuse packing peanuts and block foam packing.
Styrofoam Recycling
- Look for a Styrofoam drop-off site in your area. A quick search on the internet will help you find somewhere nearby that you can drop off your Styrofoam trash. Just make sure you’ve taken off all tape, other garbage, etc. so that it’s just the Styrofoam you’re recycling. Otherwise it’ll most likely end up in the landfill.
- Take advantage of Mail Back services. If the drop-off location is far from your house, or your community doesn’t have one at all, there is a Mail Back program that you can use.
- Rather than purchasing new packing supplies, reuse packing peanut or foam for packages that you send out.
- Drop off packing peanuts to your nearby UPS store. You may want to call to make sure they accept used packing peanuts, but many stores will gladly reuse your old packing supplies.
With Earth Day coming up take the time to think about how you will reduce, reuse, and recycle this year!

5 Steps to a Front Porch Makeover
Spring has sprung! I love seeing everyone in my neighborhood out working to beautify and restore their yards again after a long winter. It feels good, doesn't it? One of the best and easiest ways to improve the exterior situation of your home, is to show your front porch a little tender love and care. It honestly doesn't take tons of time or money.... just some concentrated effort. Here are 5 steps to a beautiful front porch makeover you can try this season.
1. Paint your front door
New paint never gets old. In fact, I'm repeatedly amazed at the transforming wonders a new, fresh coat of paint can do anywhere, but especially on a front door. Your front door is the gateway to the rest of your home, so it should be a stunner. Whether you go with a bright, punchy green or a classic black-- either way, a fresh coat of paint will take your porch to the next level.
2. Paint the porch and trim
Again, never underestimate the power of paint. Go ahead and give all of your trim a fresh coat. If your porch is wood, go ahead and take the time to repaint the whole thing. It might seem like a huge waste of time, but it's now. If you want your porch to pop, fresh paint everywhere is the key.
3. Add plants
What better way to refresh and revitalize your porch than with greenery! Hanging ferns and potted flowers and plants will give life to even the most tired, worn out porch. It doesn't have to be fancy!
4. Put up a new light fixture
Getting a new light fixture for your porch, is like getting a new pair of glasses for your face. It changes everything!! Swap out an old, outdated fixture for something sleek and modern, and your whole porch will look different- in a good way!
5. Layer welcome mats
I am personally loving the layered welcome mat look these days. It makes everything feel more cozy! It's simple. Start with a bigger outdoor rug, and then layer a smaller mat on top. That's it!

And there you have it!
What is your favorite way to freshen up a porch?

Bathroom Trends 2019
Are you thinking of renovating your bathroom this year? If so, you’re in luck! 2019’s bathroom trends are some of my favorite yet and I’m sure you’ll agree. With more unique tiles and bigger statement pieces, this year’s trends are all about making an impact. Check out some of this year’s bathroom trends below and see which ones you’d want in your home!
Bathroom Trends
Rounded Rectangle Mirrors
A rounded rectangle mirror is the next step up from the circle mirrors you’ve been seeing everywhere for the past couple of years. According to Emily Henderson, you’ll start seeing these mirrors all over this year.
Industrial Style
This may or may not be a style that you like, but I love it! Mix metal and wood with your vanity or accents throughout your bathroom and your bathroom will have a modern, urban style.
Interesting Tile
I don’t think you’ll find someone who doesn’t love simple white subway tile, but there are so many other options to consider! With all the tile sizes, colors, shapes, and textures use your tile to make a statement in your bathroom.
Marble
Use marble throughout your bathroom. Pick a marble that is so beautiful it stands alone as a piece of art in your bathroom and think about using large slabs on your walls or in the shower to really make a statement.
Statement Art
Speaking of a statement, even if you aren’t able to completely redo your bathroom this year, find a piece of statement art to hang in your bathroom. We put such care and thought in what will hang on the walls in our house, why do we so often forget about the bathroom? This year statement art will be all over our bathrooms.
What do you think of 2019’s bathroom trends?
