How to Organize Your Closet

Posted by Alyssa on April 14, 2017

closet

Now that the weather is warmer and you may be getting ready to pack away your winter things, this is the perfect time to organize your closet! Yes, yes, cleaning out closets is possibly the worst job after cleaning toilets, but doesn’t it feel amazing once everything is organized? If you’ve tossed everything you own onto the floor just to find that one lost shoe or every hanger in your closet has ended up on your bed while you searched for a lost cardigan, use some of these tips to help bring order to the chaos.

 closet

via In My Own Style

  • Store things in clear plastic boxes so that you can easily see what is inside without having to pull everything out. Label the boxes for even quicker access.
  • Keep often used things within easy reach. Less used things should be closer to the floor and the least used things should be stored on upper shelves.
  • Stow out of season objects away to make more room in your closet. Think creatively about where you could store your winter clothes - under a bed, in trunks, or upper shelves of less used closets.

closet

via Home Talk

  • Customize your closet by adding hanging shelves, shoe racks, or hooks. Hang bags on hooks and keep shoes visible with their mates to keep things within easy reach.
  • Get rid of everything you don’t need, use, or want. If it’s ripped or stained, if you haven’t worn it in over a year, or if it doesn’t fit, get rid of it. Likewise, if there is something in your closet that shouldn’t be there, move it. Toys, books, exercise equipment, towels, etc. don’t belong in your clothes closet.

  • Color code your closet. Hanging clothing by color will help you be able to quickly find what you need.

Do you have any tricks that have helped you organize your closets?

The Best Instant Carpet Cleaner in the World

Posted by Alyssa on April 13, 2017

True or False: Nobody ever spills anything on your carpet and it stays perfectly clean ALL THE TIME.

If you answered true, Congratulations!!  Your children/grandchildren/roomates/pets must listen to you more than mine listen to me!  I kind of don't like you anymore....You can now stop reading this blog post and be on your merry little way.  Enjoy your perfect carpet!

If you answered false, you're in good company!  I have three small children, and despite my efforts to keep spillage to a minimum, it is unusual for a single day to go by without some sort of accident on my area rugs or carpet.  That is our reality, and I've learned to accept it.  Over the years (since becoming a mom), I have literally tried every carpet cleaning method and product out there.  And do you know what?  Nothing ever did exactly what it claimed to do, and I was almost always disappointed and frustrated.

Until a few months ago.....when I found the best carpet cleaner in the world!!  It's called Folex, (you can pretty much buy it anywhere) and it's amazing.  I stumbled upon this stuff, and I tell you what, it is liquid gold/magic in a bottle.  It removes crystal light, blood, rust, grime, makeup, ink, grease, food, and more!  And the best part is that you get instant results- you don't even have to rinse, vacuum or wait around!  You simply spray this magic liquid directly onto the stain, rub it around with your finger tips, blot it with an absorbent cloth, and BAM!!  SPOTS WILL DISAPPEAR INSTANTLY!  My husband and I have been blown away.  It really does work!

To be clear, I have no affiliation with Folex... this stuff is just my new favorite go-to and it's worked miracles for me, so I had to share!  Go do yourself a favor and pick up a bottle!

Pop of Color

pop of color

Nothing is more fun to include in your home than a bright pop of color. I looked at my living room the other day and realized that everything I own is gray, blue, and brown. With the sun shining into my window and the flowers blooming, I realized that I needed to bring in some color into my life! I bought a bouquet of flowers, and that helped, but now I’m on a mission to brighten up my home using pops of color. Aren’t these ideas of how to incorporate color inspiring?

Easter Crafts for Kids

Posted by Alyssa on April 10, 2017

There are just some traditions I just can't let go of.  Like dyeing Easter eggs.  Is it kind of a pain?  Definitely.  Do the cool designs I try to make ever turn out? Absolutely and without quesiton not. (Seriously, I feel like pinterest is just promoting lies with all the pictures of crazy perfect eggs.  I'll believe it when I see it in person.)  Is it anxiety provoking with small children flinging dye every which way and spilling it on their clothes?  Uh huh!  But I continue to do it every. single. year because I grew up doing it and I want my own kids to love it as much as I did.  That, and also, the egg salad sandwiches afterwards are kind of a big draw for me too.

If dyeing eggs just isn't your thing, or you're simply looking to add a few more Easter crafts to your holiday line-up, here are a few fun (and mostly less messy than dyeing eggs) Easter crafts for kids to do this week.....

How to do Laundry

Posted by Alyssa on April 9, 2017

How to do Laundry

Whether you’ve never quite figured out what temperature to set your washing machine or you have a high school senior about to move out and you’re afraid all her white shirts will be pink, this simple list of instructions will help you know how to do laundry like a pro!

1. Check the labels on your clothes. Some clothing may require special washing and drying instructions. Don’t ruin your favorite shirt just because you forgot to check the tag.

laundry tags

via Pop Sugar

2. Separate your clothes into piles of whites, lights, darks, fragile (sweaters, lingerie, etc.), and towels.

3. Empty out all the pockets. Obviously paper will not survive the washing machine and pens can explode and stain clothing during wash cycles.

4. Treat any stains before washing. They will be significantly easier to remove before washing than if you wait until after they’ve already gone through the laundry.

5. Add soap to the machine and make sure you have added the right amount of soap. Not enough and your clothing may not get as cleaned. Too much and the soap suds will not be able to be rinsed completely.

6. Set water temperature depending on the type of clothing you’re washing. Warm and hot water can shrink clothing, so when in doubt go with cold.

          Lights and Whites = Warm

          Darks and delicates = Cold

          Towels and Bedding = Hot

7. Add clothes but don’t over stuff the machine! Adding too many clothes in the washer will make the machine overwork and could damage it.

laundry

8. After the wash cycle is complete, shake out the clothes before adding them to the dryer to help them dry faster and reduce wrinkles.

9. Empty lint tray before drying! Leaving the lint to build up in the lint tray is a safety hazard and can lead to fire.

10. Choose drying time and temperature. Any clothes that need to be air dryed should be hung up immediately to avoid wrinkles.

High heat = cotton, jeans, towels, heavy fabrics

          Medium = synthetic materials

Low = lingerie and workout clothes

11. As soon as the dryer is done, take out the clothes so they don’t wrinkle.

Complementary Colors

Posted by Alyssa on April 8, 2017

color wheel

When it comes to picking a color palette for your home, using complementary colors is a simple way to make a big impact. Complementary colors are hues that are opposite of each other on the color wheel, such as yellow and purple.

Using complementary colors in your designs creates high contrast, and is a useful way to highlight design elements or add pops of color. The most successful way to use complementary colors in your home is to pick one dominant color and use its complement as an accent. These can be intense color combinations, so be sure to include neutrals in your design to keep things from getting too wild! Scroll through the examples below for ideas of how to incorporate complementary colors into your home.

5 Ways to Make Your TV Less Conspicuos

Posted by Alyssa on April 7, 2017

If you read my post a few weeks ago, you know how I personally feel about hanging TV's over the fireplace.  No bueno!  I do however completely understand the struggle of trying to figure out where to put that pesky black box. It can be really tricky to find a location that is conducive to comfortable TV watching, without making it the entire focal point of the room! I have pondered over this question more times than I can count.  It might take a little more creative brain power, but I promise you can find a satisfactory solution!  Here are 5 ways to decorate around your TV without allowing it be the center of everything....

1. Place the tv to one side of the fireplace.

via Studio McGee

2. Place the tv on a totally opposite wall of the fireplace.

3. Take advantage of built-ins.

4. Hide the TV behind sliding barn doors.
