Hi! I’m Emily, homemaker at our handmade farmhouse. I write about my daily adventures experimenting in the kitchen, DIY home projects, gardening with my family, and intentional, affordable decorating. I believe HOME should be a safe-haven from life’s daily weight and always be the place you want to be most in the world. By learning to decorate with intention, you can transform your home into a unique space that reflects your personality and individual style.
In 2016-2018 my family and I built our own home on nights and weekends to make our dream home a reality. This journey changed us in many ways, and has given us a deep appreciation for quality time together. After 20 long months, we were able to move into our handmade farmhouse. Soon after we started living like a family again. Dreams can come true, if you’re willing to work for them!
4 years have now gone by and I really wanted to finally shift our focus to finishing up our master bedroom space. My desire is to create a space that feels very light, cozy, and relaxing in hopes our room would become a retreat at the end of the day. I was thrilled to have the opportunity to collaborate with RC Willey, especially after falling in love with their cozy cobblestone sofa, their white linen Zuma bed, and their darling striped upholstered bench. I created a mood board for our bedroom that included these pieces and couldn't wait to get it all put together!
As for the Zuma bed, I was eager to see how it looked in person. The beautiful cream linen has given our room such a cozy feeling. I absolutely love no longer having a bed skirt, the lines of this bed frame are clean and classic.
The striped bench might be my favorite piece of all (and that's saying A LOT!) I found that this bench has the perfect color of fabric therefore it seems to look good in many rooms in our home. It is so versatile! If you follow along over on Instagram, then you probably saw this REEL I made, showing how many places the bench looks cute in our home. The lid can be removed to use the bench for storage, which is a huge added bonus.
The day the sofa arrived, I could not believe how much I loved it. This sofa has unique lines that give it a vintage feel. Its beautiful wood feet and pleated, English-style arms just instantly won my heart. So much character! I instantly knew this sofa had to stay in our living room for guests to sit on and enjoy. I swapped out our sofa and put it up in our bedroom and it worked out great.
As for finishing off our room, I have one big blank wall and I am hoping to finish it by adding this gorgeous antique floor mirror.I think it will look beautiful and add warmth to the space with its gold leaf frame.
I have loved working with RC Willey. They delivered quality, beautiful and comfortable pieces to our home. Check out how great it looks!
Freezers are a must-have purchase for households of any size. Whether used for additional storage or an easy-to-heat-up meal, freezers are a modern convenience that can significantly aid in food preparation.
Freezers have a lifespan of up to 20 years, with the average one lasting around 11 years. That’s a long time to have an appliance, which makes your decision about buying a freezer all the more critical. This buying guide will give you all the information you need to choose the right freezer for your home and ensure you get the most out of your purchase.
Determine the Freezer Size You Need
Because every family is different, you’ll want to identify some key features that your household wants in a freezer. In order to do that, you’ll have to answer some questions:
Do you eat out a lot?
Do you typically serve frozen meals?
Do you like to have space for food storage?
Your answers to these questions will help you determine the features and freezer size that is best for your family. You may just need a freezer that is attached to a fridge, or you may want a separate freezer that offers more space.
Once you know what your household’s requirements are, it’s time to determine the freezer size that will best suit those needs. If you don’t have a lot of space, you might settle for a fridge/freezer combo, but if you have space and require more storage, you could consider purchasing a deep freezer instead.
Types of Freezers
A joint fridge-freezer is one the most common freezer purchases because it comes in a variety of combinations, including units with freezers on the top, bottom, or side. For more information about the refrigerator side of this traditional combo, check out the RC Willey Refrigerator Buying Guide.
Sometimes your family may need a little extra space, and that’s where a chest or upright freezer can come in handy. Separate from your refrigerator unit, these are freezers that can store anything from frozen meats to pizza dough.
Chest Freezers
Chest freezers maximize storage space and are slightly cheaper than upright freezers. They are typically short and long, but also come in smaller, more compact options like the Danby Chest Freezer, which is only 5 cubic feet and perfect for small spaces. Air doesn't circulate as much in a chest freezer as other models, which helps prevent freezer burn better than uprights. The downside to them, however, is that the lack of shelving means you may have a harder time finding particular items since everything tends to get lumped together.
Upright Freezers
If room and organization are your concerns, then an upright freezer might be the solution for you. They take up less physical area than a traditional chest freezer and offer more shelving options for organization. However, this can also be a downside for some buyers as more shelving also means less space to put your frozen treats. Upright freezers also have a shorter lifespan compared to chest freezers, with an average upright freezer lasting only about 5 years.
Freezer Features
There are many add-on features to consider when making a freezer purchase. It’s critical for you to pick and choose between all the available “bells and whistles” and select the ones most important to you and your household’s needs.
Alarm
Some self-defrosting upright freezers come equipped with their own alarm system to alert you when the interior gets too warm. This feature can be a real cost and time-saver by helping you take fast and preventative action whenever your freezer stops working before all of your frozen treats go bad.
Door Lock
If you have kids in the house and like to keep alcohol or other valuables in your freezer, you may want to consider buying an appliance with a door lock. This will also prevent your freezer door from ever being left open on accident.
Manual vs. Self-Defrost
Ice build-up on the walls of your freezer can be notorious for decreasing its efficiency and increasing your energy bill. That’s why it’s important to pay attention to your freezer’s defrosting capabilities. A manual-defrost freezer (which is the option available with chest models) will typically be more energy-efficient and less likely to cause freezer burn than a self-defrosting model. However, the downside of this is that manual-defrost uprights often have trouble keeping their door shelves as cool as the rest of the interior. Self-defrosting uprights, on the other hand, do a great job at keeping the entire freezer nice and cool. Plus, they save you the inconvenience of having to actively defrost.
Quick Freeze vs. Soft Freeze
If you are the type of person who hates having to wait for your ice cream to thaw after taking it out of the freezer, you may want to opt for a freezer model that is equipped with a soft freeze feature. On the flip side, if you’re looking to freeze large quantities of food all at once, a freezer with a quick freeze option might make more sense for you.
Power-on Light
The last thing you want to do during a power outage is open your freezer door and let all of the cold air out. Instead, you can check whether your freezer is functioning properly by glancing at the power-on light. It’s an essential feature of any freezer that takes the guessing game out of the equation.
Ultimately, freezers are a pretty “meaty” purchase (get the frozen food pun?) for any shopper, so making sure you select one that fits all your needs is a must. For more information about freezers and to talk to a sales representative, visit your nearest RC Willey location today.
It’s one of those dreaded household appliance replacements. Few things are worse than hearing your washing machine stutter to a discouraging clunk and knowing that it might be time for a replacement. But never fear – this washing machine buying guide will help you navigate the pitfalls of appliance shopping and get you set up with an upgraded device in no time.
First, though, how do you know for sure whether your washing machine needs replacing? The average washing machine lasts about 10-14 years. Towards of the end of its lifespan, most washing machines will start to give you clues that it’s on its last legs.
One sign of impending washer failure is that your clothes are still soaking wet at the end of a cycle. Extremely wet clothes suggest your washer unsuccessfully completed its spin cycle. Similarly, consistently loud sounds while running could indicate problems. If you have a single wash that was unusually loud, it may just be an uneven loading issue. However, if your machine is constantly loud while in use, it could be a sign of internal bearing problems.
While hose replacements are a common maintenance repair for washing machines, be aware that constant leaking hints that your machine’s tub has cracked, and it’s time to replace your washer. Also, if you allow leaks to occur for too long, you can end up with expensive water damage and mold problems.
Finally, if you notice that your clothes are still coming out with stains or may even have unwashed detergent left on them, it could signify that your machine isn’t properly going through its wash cycles. This is another sign that it may be time for a replacement.
Measure Your Space Before You Buy
Before you buy a new washing machine, it’s wise to consider a few factors about your household to ensure you purchase the best appliance for your family’s needs. Here are some points to consider:
How many people is your washing machine currently servicing? The average American family of four washes 50 pounds of laundry every week. That equals over 6,000 articles of clothing every year! Your household may wash more or less clothing than the average. This washing frequency largely depends on the number of people and age of your family since young children and babies require frequent changing and laundering.
What kind of laundry room do you have? The location and size of your laundry room should be a critical aspect for your washing machine considerations. It makes a big difference if your washer is located upstairs versus a basement bedroom. You should carefully measure both the width of the space your washing machine will inhabit, but also the measurements to get the machine into that area.
Consider stairs, corners, and entrances that may need to be navigated to get your washing machine installed. Washing machines are heavy and can average 135-205 pounds, so it’s best to choose a machine that can easily fit into your house or apartment without undue hardship. Remember to calculate enough space for open doors and tops within the area your washer will live. Aesthetics are also important. Don’t pick machine colors or styles that will clash with your surrounding space.
How often do you plan to do laundry? The average American family spends 1 hour and 15 minutes doing laundry a day, which equates to 1-2 loads of laundry a day. Larger capacity washers can cut down on the number of loads you end up doing, but they also take up a larger footprint within your home.
Are you pairing your washing machine with a matching dryer? Although it is not necessary to buy a washing machine and dryer at the same time, if you plan to have a matching set in the future, it is wise to take measurements for both at the same time.
Will you install your washing machine yourself or have it professionally installed? While self-installation is budget-friendly, some manufacturers require a professional installation of their appliances. Otherwise, any manufacturer warranties they offer could be voided. Professional installations often include services to remove old appliances from the home, which is a convenient way to move and dispose of old washing machines.
Types of Washing Machines
When shopping for washing machines, there are two main types to keep in mind. Agitator top-loading washing machines have a vertically oriented tub with a central agitator to churn and mix clothes in a pool of soapy water that removes dirt and stains. Agitator top-loaders generally are a less expensive option, and some consumers with mobility considerations find them easier to use as you don’t need to bend over to reach inside the appliance.
There’s less maintenance required to keep a top-loading machine running well. However, agitator top-loaders use more water and energy, and they do not clean as well as their high-efficiency (HE) counterparts. Instead of a central agitator, HE top-loaders have a small center post that it uses to move and spin the clothes throughout the tub during the wash cycle. This means that loads can be larger, and the unit uses less water and energy to clean them. However, HE machines require the use of special laundry detergent.
Unlike top-loading machines, front loaders have horizontally oriented tubs that use gravity and the natural friction of your clothes rubbing against each other to gently scrub at the material and lift away stains and soil. All front-loading washing machines are considered to be HE models as their unique design needs less water and energy than traditional top-loaders. However, this same design can lead to mold and mildew issues, so it’s highly recommended to leave the door open on your front-load washer when it’s not in use and run regular self-cleaning cycles.
Front Load Washer in Washing Machine Buying Guide Front loaders typically are the gentlest on clothing and also earn high cleaning scores from Consumer Reports. However, like all HE washers, a special laundry detergent must be used. HE washers also generally take the longest time to clean and since the door locks once a cycle begins, you can’t sneak in a rogue sock you found after you’ve started your batch.
Pedestal washers, or twin loaders, are another type of washer. These appliances are mini-HE-top-load machines designed to nest under a traditional front-load machine. Twin loaders save time by performing two different washes simultaneously (for example, a normal batch of laundry could go into the main front-load machine, and a smaller batch of delicate items could also go into the pedestal washer). However, you’ll need to pay for this added convenience as these machines are typically an expensive add-on and require more space in your home.
To sum it up here’s a quick run-down of the pros and cons when considering the kind of washing machine that is right for you.
Top Loader Front Loader Pros:
Least expensive option
Shorter wash times (30-45 minutes)
More comfortable to load/unload
Smaller footprint in home (you don’t need a large space in front of your machine to open the door)
Cons:
Uses more water and energy
Clothes are wetter / spin cycle doesn’t remove as much water
Doesn’t clean as well as front-loaders
Can damage fabrics
Front Loader Pros:
Exceptional cleaning
Superior water savings
High energy efficiency
Can be stacked with a matching dryer
Gentle on fabrics
Generally has more load capacity
Cons:
Low, deep tubs can be difficult to load/unload
Longer wash times (60-80 minutes)
Must use HE detergent
Mold and mildew issues if not maintained
Best Washing Machine Features
There are a couple of other considerations to make when shopping for washing machines. One thing is understanding the capacity of the washer you’re interested in purchasing. Depending on your household’s size and how often you want to run your washing machine, you may need a larger or smaller machine. On average, front-load washing machines have the largest capacity drums, but top-load machines come in a variety of different sizes to fit any home or apartment.
You can calculate capacity on your own by measuring the center of the tub to the outside wall. Once you have this number (the machine’s radius), then multiply it against the same radius squared. Finally, take that value and multiply by pi (3.14). In other words, the formula for measuring washing machine capacity is:
Volume in cubic feet = (pi) (r²) (D)
If math isn’t your strong suit, you can always look up manufacturer capacity online. Here’s also a quick guide to how typical washing machine sizes correspond with average load weight.

Even though your backyard may be on the smallish side, that doesn’t mean it can’t be transformed into an outdoor escape. No matter how small or large, there are several ways you can optimize your backyard space with strategically placed (and gorgeous) furnishings. Leave the rat race of your 9:00 to 5:00 job behind and take a seat in your newly decorated environment. Not even late spring showers will be able to dampen your spirits.
Bring Your Living Room Outside with New Chairs
An easy way to turn your outdoor space into an oasis to find attractive, affordable, and comfortable chairs. Outdoor seating options are a great way to craft areas meant for socializing and can add character to a small space. In yards with less room for movement, settle for two chairs and a table. Position the chairs at an angle and put the table in between the chairs to make the space feel larger than it is. Tuck the arrangement into a corner of the yard or against a house or fence line to make space for movement (and the occasional game of catch).
For a colorful touch, keep an eye out for decorative pillows designed for outdoor use. Crafted to sustain damp mornings and frost-bitten evenings, these pillows can typically handle a variety of weather conditions and are easy to wash if that pitcher of lemonade accidentally spills on one. Not only do pillows add some personality to your outdoor space, they also cultivate a level of comfort on par with indoor living rooms. Instead of watching TV, set up a star-gazing party and sink into the comfort of your new outdoor chairs.
No backyard - regardless of its size - feels truly inviting without some sense of privacy. Adding a trellis, whether for practical or decorative reasons, provides some seclusion and can protect your backyard relaxation time from the prying eyes of neighbors.
A structural component with a beautiful silhouette, trellises can also section off spaces in your backyard for different purposes. Want a napping spot under a tree? Use your trellis to create a spot dedicated to chilling out that is separate from your garden work. For some great visuals (and smells!), try adding some climbing roses to your make-shift wall.
For a quick setup option, check out these Metal 49 Inch Garden Trellis products. Add some flowering plants and place these vertical structures around a comfy sun-bathing spot in your yard. Outdoor living doesn’t get much better than this.
Create a Garden of Green
When you think of gardens, you may imagine acres of flowers, vegetable plants, and fruit trees spanning your line of sight. Even within a small backyard space, however, you can create a miniature version of this vista that provides nice fresh-grown produce for your household.
For small yards, opt for wall planters, raised garden beds, and folding plant stands. Do some research on the type of plant that works best for each growing option. Think outside the box and consider planting sweet-smelling herbs like lavender or mint. Both the flowering of these plants and their delicious smells can add to the ambiance of your outdoor greenhouse.
Perennials bloom every year on their own, which makes these flowers a great option for busy yard owners. Make sure to read the tags attached to these bulb or seed packets to determine whether they are perennial or biennial (meaning they grow for only two years). Regardless, options like this Spring Fling Orange Metal Folding Plant Stand can add some greenery in a space-saving way to your outdoor setup.
Plan for Some Family or Friend Time with a Fire Pit
No matter how small or large your backyard space is, a fire pit is a great way to decorate with company in mind. Ideal for both relaxation with a few close friends or hosting the extended family barbecue, fire pits offer a bonding activity for outdoor roasting. Make some s’mores or hot dogs and save on cleanup time with a variety of fire pit sizes and designs.
To combine comfortable seating and a fire pit, look into products like the Milo Navy Espresso 4 Piece Loveseat with Fire Table Patio Set. Designed with worry-free stain-resistant fabric, this set will allow you to play host while still enjoying your social gathering. The semi-circle arrangement encourages conversation and will allow guests to forge both new relationships and strengthen old ones while staring into the flickering flames.
Time spent outdoors is important, and there’s no reason why even the smallest yards shouldn’t feel like havens away from the hustle and bustle of daily life. For more ideas on how to furnish your backyard, check out the outdoor section at your closest RC Willey today.

For over thirty years, Tempur-Pedic has been an innovator in the sleep industry with a mission of providing the most restful sleep possible to its customers. Tempur-Pedic’s most recent collections offer a beautiful synergy of materials that provide targeted support and give, which ultimately offers unbeatable benefits.
What Makes Tempur-Pedic Mattresses Different
Tempur-Pedic mattresses provide several advantages over other models. Here’s a quick guide to the many ways your nighttime sleep experience will improve with the help of Tempur-Pedic.
Fall Asleep Faster Tempur-Pedic’s state-of-the-art layers adapt and conform to your body’s unique curves and angles. This allows you to feel cradled and comfortable from the moment you lie down until you wake up.
Cool Down Advanced materials whisk away excess heat, which keeps your body at a perfect temperature all night long.
Sleep Deeper and Easier By evenly absorbing the impact of pressure points and dramatically reducing how your partner’s motion transfer affects you, Tempur-Pedic mattresses minimize tossing and turning and provides an undisturbed, rejuvenated sleep experience.
All Tempur-Pedic mattresses are made up of multiple layers of materials. These layers achieve a holistic network of targeted support and comfortable contouring. The base layers are composed of a blend of original materials that provides a sturdy foundation for the rest of the mattress weight.
Depending on the model, the middle supporting layers evenly distribute weight as well as reduce and disperse heat. These proprietary combinations specifically target different sleeping needs, which means that customers can find the best mattress that works for them. The top layers are what Tempur-Pedic mattresses are really known for. Constructed of its famous TEMPUR material, the top comfort layers determine the overall “feel” of the mattress. This layer determines whether sleepers rest on a soft, medium or firm surface.
Tempur-Pedic Material
The patented materials and smart designs pioneered by Tempur-Pedic differentiate the brand and have played a large part in its title as the most highly recommended brand in America. There are several material options from which customers can select.
Original TEMPUR® stemmed from material originally developed for NASA astronauts. Designed to reduce G-forces, this composition now provides sleepers with the ultimate night’s rest. For people that prefer a softer foundation, the TEMPUR-ES® (Extra Soft) option reworked the original formula with a tighter cell structure. This innovation resulted in a layer with an extra soft feel.
Tempur-Pedic also offers high pressure-relieving material for customers with chronic pain exacerbated by prone sleeping positions. The TEMPUR-APR® (Advanced Pressure Relief) option reduces the force applied to body pressure points, which helps minimize tossing and turning. Similarly, the TEMPUR-APR+™ (Advanced Pressure Relief Plus) adds to the original’s comfort level with a more advanced cell structure. The Ventilated TEMPUR-APR+ features an all-new, ultra-breathable design exclusive to the TEMPUR-LUXEbreeze series.
Tempur-Pedic also specializes in accessories that help amplify your sleep experience. The PURECOOL and PURECOOL+ Phase Change Material absorb excess heat to help you feel cooler as you sleep. Also, the SMARTCLIMATE Dual Cover System and SMARTCLIMATE MAX Dual Cover System offers removable cooling layers, which give customers the ability to customize how hot or cool they feel.
Available Tempur-Pedic Mattress Collections
Tempur-Pedic has several mattress collections available. For example, the TEMPUR-Adapt® provides three different mattress series with up to four layer zones. The TEMPUR-ProAdapt™ series offers 25% more proprietary material than its Adapt peers. The TEMPUR-LUXEbreeze° series combines pressure relief and state-of-the-art cooling technology for a restful night’s sleep.
Having a good mattress is crucial for falling asleep faster and staying asleep longer. However, purchasing the right mattress for your health and bed needs can be surprisingly difficult. That’s why we put together this guide for understanding different mattress sizes on the market and the one that might be best for you.
Standard Mattress Sizes
The two most important elements for selecting a new mattress are size and materials. Knowing your ideal size is most important as the right materials are easier to select once you have the brand and measurements picked out. Listed below are the most common mattress sizes. Thinking through the size you need is a great first step before beginning your shopping process.
California King Size Bed Dimension
Created as an alternative to the popular King size bed, California King mattresses combine the luxurious breadth of their predecessors with length that might appeal to an NBA basketball player. Intended as a way for tall sleepers to avoid having their feet hang over the bed’s edge, California Kings are an attractive option for anybody that wants a little extra leg room and measure 72″ x 84″. Although California King mattresses typically run the same cost as a standard King, sheets and bedding sets that are sized appropriately can sometimes be harder or more expensive to find.
King Size Bed Dimensions
The other large mattress option is a standard King at 76″ x 80″. These mattresses are ideal for couples who move around a lot in their sleep or for families where the occasional child or dog sneaks into the bed halfway through the night. Some King mattresses are split down the center, which allows couples to choose different levels of firmness that suit their individual sleep preferences. These split styles also make the mattress easier to move. Typically the most pricey mattress option, Kings can be a great investment for more than one sleeper or those who particularly love their space.
Queen Size Bed Dimensions
The most popular mattress size is the Queen as it provides ample room for a single sleeper and can also be a perfect fit for couples. Measuring at 60″ x 80″, Queen size mattresses don’t take up as much floor space as kings and can easily fit in most standard bedroom sizes. Because of its popularity, there are many different options for accessories, covers, and bedding sized for a Queen mattress.
Full Size Bed Dimensions
A single adult sleeper looking to maximize bedroom floor space may prefer a Full mattress. Clocking in at 53″ x 75″, this mattress is ideal for small apartments or shared spaces. Couples who don’t move around too much can also sleep comfortably on Full mattresses. For taller individuals, a Full XL is also available.
Twin XL Size Bed Dimensions
At 38″ x 80″, a Twin XL is a great option for growing teenagers or still gangly college students. Narrow enough to fit one sleeper comfortably, Twin XLs provide more length for sleepers that need extra leg room. These mattresses can fit in a guest bedroom or dormitory and still provide plenty of walking space.
Twin Size Bed Dimensions
Children who no longer need a crib usually graduate into a Twin mattress. At 38″ x 75″, Twins are very versatile and can grow with children well into adulthood. They are also the perfect size for a small room. This mattress size is fairly standard and can be found at most retail and furniture stores.
Other Things to Consider When Choosing a Mattress Size
Besides the physical dimensions of the actual mattress, there are several other factors to consider when it comes to mattress sizing and space. Below is just a short breakdown of important tips to keep in mind when mattress shopping.
The Size of Your Bedroom
Before pulling the trigger on a purchase, take into consideration the overall size of your bedroom and any other present furniture. You may want to use a tape measure to plot out floor space to figure out what size mattress you can reasonably fit while still having space to safely navigate around the room. Also avoid creating difficult to navigate spaces or narrow walkways. The last thing you want when you have to wake to use the restroom at 2:00 am is to fall into the side of your dresser.
Who Will Be Using the Bed
Not everybody has the same sleep preferences and finding a mattress option that fits the needs of all the sleepers who may end up in your bed can be challenging. This is true particularly for couples (and has also led to its fair share of inter-partner conflict).
The first step to resolving some of these disputes is by understanding what makes you comfortable while sleeping. This knowledge could include a combination of size and material needs. Some people can sleep flat on their backs and move around very little in their sleep. If this sounds like you, you may be able to sleep just fine on a smaller-sized, medium-firm mattress.
However, some people like to sprawl out at night and don’t feel comfortable unless they have the extra space only a larger-sized mattress can provide. Knowing your preferred sleeping style – and understanding your partner’s as well – is critical to picking a mattress that can stand the test of time for both of you. Below are some categories that most mattress sellers use to help shoppers find the right type of mattress firmness, which is a key part to getting a good night’s sleep.
Soft to Medium-Firm
Side sleepers generally prefer softer mattresses that conform to their body’s curves. This contouring can especially feel nice around shoulders and hips. Mattresses with a soft to medium-firm designation can help alleviate body aches and pains and appeal to side sleepers. If your partner prefers a firmer mattress, one option you can try is to customize it with a mattress pillow-top, which could offer a nice compromise for different sleep styles.
Medium to Medium-Firm
These mattresses are slightly firmer and support the lower back. These mattresses are perfect for back-sleepers and can still provide enough cushion for partners that may prefer a softer feel.
Medium-Firm to Firm
Stomach-sleepers tend to need extra support for their lower backs, so a firmer mattress tends to be the most comfortable option. Firmer mattresses can make a big difference for pregnant women and sleepers that have chronic pain issues.
Understanding the differences between firmness options will allow you to select the optimal combination of how a mattress feels while laying down and its size.
Materials
As sleep technology improves, there are a wide variety of mattress materials on the market that fit every budget and preferred sleeping position. Knowing the kind of material that will work best for you is also a good tip to keep in mind while mattress shopping. Here is a breakdown of the four most popular mattress compositions.

Pros
Cons
Innerspring
This traditional mattress is made up of encased coils with a comfortable padding on top.
7-8 years
Good if you tend to change positions a lot at night. Helps keep hot sleepers cool.
Heavy. Does not provide a ton of support or contouring options for sore bodies.
Foam / Memory foam
Made from several different layers of foam that adapt to your sleeping position.
Low-density foam: 5-7 years High-density foam:10-15 years
Low motion transfer. Good at relieving pressure points.
Can make certain sleepers feel hot. Lower-quality foams contain harmful chemicals.
Hybrid
Constructed with both springs and memory foam, it strikes the perfect balance between the breathability and support of an innerspring mattress with the pressure-point relief of foam mattresses.
7- 15 years
Good at relieving pressure points. Sleeps cool.
Can be expensive. Extremely heavy.
Latex
Very similar to foam, but a bit firmer. Good resilience with memory foam support.
8 – 15 years
Provides cool sleeping. Durable.
Expensive. Very heavy. Can induce an allergic reaction.
Budget
Finally, one of the most limiting mattress considerations for most people is price. Foam mattresses have the lowest market entry point, while latex mattresses are typically the most expensive.

Mattress Sizes and Dimensions FAQ
What kind of mattress accessories are available?
A mattress protector is crucial to improving the longevity of your new mattress and is highly recommended. The protector prevents dirt, sweat, and dead skin cells from absorbing and accumulating into the mattress over time. Some manufacturers require the purchase of a mattress protector in order to maintain a warranty. Mattress toppers, pads, or pillow tops are great ways to add a softer contouring layer to a firmer mattress for better pressure point relief. Individuals who sleep in a combination of positions or couples with different sleeping styles may want to invest in a topper to customize their comfort layer.
How do I support my mattress?
Mattresses can be extremely heavy, and without proper support, they can become deformed. This may cause extreme discomfort to the sleeper and damage to the mattress. If your brand-new mattress feels uncomfortable because it’s not supporting your weight, you may need a new bed frame, box spring, or foundation as well.
What’s the difference between a mattress foundation and a box spring?
A mattress foundation is a frame constructed of metal or wood with planks or slats set across the top to hold up the mattress. Most mattress foundations are designed to elevate the height of the bed to make getting in and out of the mattress easier. They also help evenly distribute your weight across the surface of the mattress. Foundations can be placed directly on the floor or on a bed frame. They are best for foam and latex mattresses.
In contrast, a box spring is a wooden frame lined with metal springs and covered in a protective fabric. They are best suited for innerspring mattresses as they help to absorb motion. They are not suited for foam or latex mattresses. Like a mattress foundation, they are designed to raise the mattress to a comfortable level, but they must be placed on a bed frame.
How often should I clean my mattress?
You should clean your mattress about every six months. There are a lot of different ways to clean a mattress, but perhaps the simplest one is to remove all bedding and mattress covers and then vacuum the entire thing. If you want to remove odors, try sprinkling baking soda on your mattress and let it sit for an hour before vacuuming. Stains can be cleaned by using a combination of fabric cleaning supplies and techniques.
There are a few pieces of financial advice that every person should strive to follow: save your money whenever possible, pay down large sums of debt, and (perhaps most importantly) keep your credit score high. In today’s economy, credit is a critical element of financial health. You need it in order to secure loans for anything from buying a car or home to even starting your own business. But how exactly does a person with no credit build credit?
