How to Use and Connect Bluetooth Headphones

Posted by Alyssa on November 7, 2017

headphones

Wireless headphones connect to a device using Bluetooth technology and allow you to listen to whatever you want without getting tangled up in cords. Once you’ve tried them, you’ll never want to go back! With the holidays quickly approaching, why not think about gifting some Bluetooth headphones? Or putting them on your own wishlist? We’ll help you understand how to use and connect your Bluetooth headphones here so you can start listening as soon as you open the package.

How to Use and Connect Bluetooth Headphones

It’s important to know that each headphone might have slightly different ways to pair, or connect, to your devices. Your headphones will come with specific instructions to help you successfully connect to your device. However, there are a few basic instructions that apply to most things you may be trying to connect to Bluetooth.

headphones

First, make sure that both your headphones and whatever device you are wanting to pair together are charged and turned on.

Make sure your headphones and device are close together so they will pick up the signal. Turn on Bluetooth on your device. Usually you can find this option under Settings.

Once Bluetooth is on, it should automatically pick up the signal from your headphones. You’ll be able to find your Bluetooth headphones listed and once you click on the name, your device will make the connection. You’ll be ready to start listening!

Like I said, there may be some slight differences when it comes to pairing individual headphones to your device, but these basics should help you get started.

How to Safely Dispose of Prescription Medications

Posted by Andie on November 4, 2017

Did you know that America's current opioid epidemic is the deadliest drug overdose crisis in American History?  In total, more than 170 people are estimated to die from overdoses every day in the U.S., and most of those deaths are linked to opioids.  There isn't just one thing that has caused this crisis, but many of these high rates of overdose deaths seem to be driven by high prescription rates.  Though heroin and fentanyl deaths have been on the rise, legal opioids still act as a gateway for many to these drugs, and experts say over prescription often leads to an increased likelihood of addiction.

This opioid epidemic is very dangerous and scary, especially as a parent. You might think you can't do anything about it, but one of the very best ways to keep yourself, your spouse, and your children safe is to take action and know exactly what's in your medicine cabinet!  Make sure to go through your medicine cabinet at least every six months.  If over-the-counter medication has expired, throw it away in the garbage.  If you have painkillers or other prescriptions that someone in your family got after going to the doctor, having surgery, etc, the best thing to do is GET RID OF IT.  This will help ensure the safety of your children & pets, and deter misuse by adults or teenagers that come into your home.   In order to dispose of prescription medications, some precautions must be taken.  Here is a list of the best ways to dispose of prescription medications......

THE BEST WAYS TO DISPOSE OF PRESCRIPTION MEDICATIONS (in order of best to worst):
1. Take unwanted and unused medication to a drug-take-back program in your community.  Many communities hold these days several times a year.  Contact your county government's trash and recycling service, or call your local nonemergency police number for more information.
2. Go to your local pharmacy, and speak with your pharmacist.  Many pharmacies will take back drugs that are unused or unwanted whenever it's convenient for you.
3. If you aren't able to get rid of medications by option 1 or 2, you will need to dispose of the medications yourself.  Here are some safe steps to take.......
A. Take prescription drugs out of original containers.
B. Mix the drugs with a very undesirable substance, such as kitty litter, coffee grounds, or poopy diaper.  (Don't open capsules).
C. Put the mixture into a disposable container, with a lid.
D. Throw it away in the garbage.

DON'T EVER:
- Give a prescription a doctor gave you to someone else.  This can prove to be very harmful, even deadly.
- Flush prescription meds down the toilet (without first speaking to a pharmacist). Medications can enter streams and rivers when flushed down the toilet, or seep into the ground water.  This is SCARY.
- Throw prescription bottles away without first concealing personal information, RX name or number, etc.

Another great resource is to call your local poison control with questions.  1-800-222-1222

Stay Safe, and keep those medicine cabinets cleaned out!

PS4 or Xbox One?

Posted by Alyssa on November 3, 2017

ps4 or xbox one

Should you get a PS4 or an Xbox One? Both consoles have their strengths, so making the decision on which one to buy can be difficult. If you’ve been debating between a PS4 and an Xbox One but aren’t sure which one is for you, we’ve put together some information to help you out.

PS4 vs. Xbox One

The video created in 2016 below goes into detail on games, hardware, and the capabilities of both consoles, but in my opinion, it comes down to this. If you love video games and are most interested in gaming, the PS4 Slim is what you’re looking for. It has more console specific games with great titles, like Uncharted and The Last of Us. On the other hand, if you love gaming but are also interested in using your console for entertainment purposes, the 4K streaming available on the Xbox One S makes it a better option.

Like the video says, it really comes down to what your friends have. If all your friends are playing Playstation, you don’t want to be the odd one out. Likewise, if everyone you know plays Xbox, that’s the one you should pick.

Which console do you prefer?

Chromecast vs. Apple TV

Posted by Alyssa on November 2, 2017

apple tv vs chromecast

Two of the most popular streaming devices are Apple TV and Chromecast - but which one should you purchase? It really comes down to what your preferences are and what you plan to use your streaming device for. Keep reading below to see the similarities and differences between Apple TV and Chromecast

Chromecast vs. Apple TV

Apple TV will let you use AirPlay from your Apple products. This means you’ll be able to stream whatever is on the screen of your iPhone, MacBook, or tablet onto the screen of your TV. This only works for Apple products though, so if you don’t own any Apple products, you may not be able to use all the feature of an Apple TV. However, even if you don’t have other Apple products in your home Apple TV has lots of apps available and you’ll still be able to use it to stream and watch videos.

watching tv

Unlike Apple TV, which only works with Apple products, Chromecast will work with anything as long as you have access to Google Chrome. You can access Netflix and YouTube while using Chromecast, so it will meet all your streaming needs. There are some limitations when it comes to using Chromecast, including some lag and lack of video quality if you are streaming from Google Chrome.

If you want a more detailed description of the differences between Apple TV and Chromecast, you can check out the video below. Overall, both Apple TV and Chromecast are great streaming devices. If you have Apple products an Apple TV is much more convenient to use. If you’re on a budget, the Chromecast is what you’re looking for.

What do you think? Do you prefer an Apple TV or a Chromecast?

7 Ways to Practice Gratitude This Month

Posted by Andie on November 1, 2017

Happy November!  Expressing gratitude for your life and the good things in it daily is a wonderful & healthy thing to be doing year round, but especailly during the month of November!  Praticing gratitude in a real and meaningful way leading up to Thanksgiving is a perfect way to kick off the holidays.  I've found that really concentrating my efforts on expressing gratitude on a personal level, and with my family, really helps freshen my perspective.  Doing it consistently makes it easier to find and appreciate all of the good in your life!

Sometimes when we think of practicing gratitude, we have the misconception that we have to be doing large scale things.  On the contrary!  Often times, the best gratitude exercises are the simplest.  Here are a handful of easy, yet meaningful ways you can practice gratitude this month....

1. Start a Gratitude Jar
Every day, write a few things you were grateful for on a slip of paper, and put them into a gratitude jar.  When you're feeling down, open up the jar and read some of the things you are grateful for to cheer you up.

2. 5 Experiences a Day Gratitude Journal
It's easy to be grateful for material possessions, but this exercise will get you thinking more and more about the interactions and experiences you have each day.  Get a little notebook, and at the end of the day jot down 5 of the best things that happened all day long!  They could be your own experiences, or something that you witnessed happen to someone else that made you feel happy.  This will help you notice goodness all around you!

3. Make a Gratitude Tree
This is a really great exercise to do with kids!  Tape a big poster of a tree up on your wall, and every night at dinner time, have everyone in your family write something they were grateful for that day on a paper leaf, then tape it up to the tree.  It's a great way to engage children, and to help them recognize all that they have. We did this a couple of years ago, and it was absolutely wonderful!  By the end of the month our tree was full, and to this day at dinner time, they always want to say what they're grateful for.

4. Daily Meditation/Reflection
One of the best ways to tap into gratitude is to spend some time each day in quiet meditation.  Do this every morning, and you'll be sure to find lots of things throughout the day that speak to your soul.

5. 1 Thing You're Grateful for a day Gratitude Journal- Get Specific!
If you want the most Return on Investment on your gratitude practice, you need to stop being too general.  Instead of simply listing one thing you're grateful for a day, dive into the details.  Instead of saying "I'm grateful for my husband", come up with 5 reasons why you are grateful for your husband.  Write a paragraph or two.  What has he taught you?  How does he serve you?  What do you love most about spending time with him?  Once you dig a little deeper, your gratitude will really grow.

6. Write a Card or Send a Text Every Day of the Month to Someone You are Grateful For
One of the best ways to show gratitude is to thank the people in your life that make it so good. Take a few minutes every day this month to express love and appreciation for the many different people that have touched your life or helped you become a better human being.  It could be your child's teacher at school, an old childhood friend, or your grandma.  The sky is the limit, and this exercise will get you reflecting on your life experiences.

7. Take a Photo Every Day of Something You are Grateful For
If writing isn't really your thing, that's okay.  Photos can tell a lot about us!  Take one photo a day of the things going on around you that bring you gratitude.  Post it on social media, or simply create your own photo journal to turn to when you need a boost.

"I don't have to chase extraordinary moments to find happiness--it's right in front of me if I'm paying attention and practicing gratitude." - Brene Brown

What do you do to practice gratitude??  I would love to get more ideas!

10 Things to Give Trick-or-Treaters Besides Candy

Posted by Andie on October 27, 2017

As a kid, the worst thing ever on Halloween night was making your way up to a doorstep in an uncomfortable costume, waiting patiently after ringing the doorbell, and squealing "Trick-or-Treat" once the door swung open, only to have someone drop a lousy toothbrush into your bucket. NOOOOOOOO!  A toothbrush??! You wasted two precious minutes of your night on a house passing out toothbrushes??!  What a travesty!  At that point you silently vowed never to go trick-or-treating to that house for the rest of your life.  Then you started sprinting to make up for lost time in your race to get the most candy ever in the history of Halloween night.

Aren't I right though?

I understand that trick-or-treating is more complicated than it was when I was a kid.  For starters, many people are concerned about food allergies.  Also, I agree that a bucket full of candy isn't exactly good for our children (or their teeth!), but to this day, years after my own trick-or-treating career, I am still asking myself the same question: Who thinks kids are going to like you if you give them a toothbrush on Halloween?  If handing out candy isn't really your thing, here are 10 things to give trick-or-treaters besides candy that will still bring a smile to their face......

How To Remove Wax From Wood Floors

Posted by Alyssa on October 26, 2017

wood floors

If you’ve spilled a candle and have wax all over your hardwood floors, don’t worry! There are a couple of different ways to remove wax from your floors without doing any damage. We’ve listed some different ideas below of how to remove wax from wood floors so you don’t have to worry every time you light a candle.

How To Remove Wax From Wood Floors

MELT IT OFF

If you’ve only got a small drip or two of wax that has already dried, gently scrape away as much of the wax as possible without scratching the wood itself. When you’ve gotten as much off as you can, use a hair dryer to melt what’s left and then wipe up the melted wax with a clean rag. Add a few drops of vinegar to the spot where the wax was and you’ll be able to pick up any leftover residue. Good as new!

FREEZE IT OFF

If the wax is still not completely dried and you’re afraid of rubbing it deeper into the wood, grab a plastic bag full of ice and set it on the wax until it has hardened. You’ll then be able to gently scrape off the majority of the wax and follow the melt it off solution to get what’s left over.

The key with anything involving your hardwood floors is to make sure you aren’t scratching the wood or leaving water sitting on top. The last thing you want to do is damage your beautiful floors!

Have you figured out a different way to remove wax from your wood floors?
