We were so honored to have Nate Berkus speak at our RC Willey Draper Showroom yesterday! Nate is the LG STUDIO Artistic Advisor and was able to show us some of the things he’s been working on, as well as give tips and ideas for designing a kitchen. I'd love to share what I learned with you below! 
Like I said, Nate is the Artistic Advisor for the LG STUDIO line of appliances. The appliances he has helped design are minimalist, sleek, and easily fit into almost any kitchen design and style. I loved this refrigerator above. It has a new finish called black stainless steel and it was beautiful! It’s hard to see in the picture, but it almost has a bronze look to it which makes it unique and beautiful. Bonus! It’s got a protective layer that makes it smudge resistant and easy to clean!
After showing us some of the appliances he has helped design, Nate gave us some insights on decorating a home and designing a kitchen. My favorite thing he said was that your home should tell your story. Don’t worry about themes or trends, just focus on bringing things that you love into your space and let your home reflect you as a person. When it comes to designing a kitchen, he gave some basic advice:
- Figure out your budget then buy the best appliances you can afford. Appliances are what keep your kitchen running and everything else can adapted or changed depending on what you have left in your budget.
- Do not follow a trend! Trends go out of style and you will want to love your kitchen long term. Nate says that anything built-in like cabinets, tile, backsplash, etc. that are expensive and require someone to come and install them should be timeless. Keeping the shell of your kitchen basic will allow you adapt and change for the trends with your accessories.
- Break the rules and don’t worry about other people’s opinions! Your home should tell your personal story, not the interior decorator or pinterest’s story. Mix metals and wood to make your kitchen have depth and think outside of the box.
- Just because something is utilitarian doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be beautiful. Use trays, beautiful cutting boards, pretty silverware holders, etc. to make things in your kitchen more appealing and beautiful.

I know this is old news, but the iPhone 7 didn’t come with a headphone jack. This caused some people, my husband especially, some grief when it came to using the headphones he already had. How Do Noise Cancelling Headphones Work?
If you can’t stand hearing ambient noises while listening to your music or podcasts, you need to invest in some noise cancelling headphones. It’s amazing that you can now block out sounds from airplanes or traffic so you can focus on what you’re listening to. But how do noise cancelling headphones work? Here at RC Willey, your source for all kinds of headphones, we have your answer!
How Do Noise Cancelling Headphones Work?
Noise cancelling headphones are built with electronics inside that are able to block ambient noises. Inside the ear cup there is a microphone that picks up the external sounds that need to be blocked. Electronics inside create a new sound wave that is 180° out of phase with the ambient noise. The new wave is able to cancel out the unwanted incoming sounds without affecting the audio you are listening to.
All of this is powered by a rechargeable battery and happens without you even realizing it. While noise cancelling headphones can’t cancel out all ambient noises, they are able to effectively block out 70% of unwanted sounds. That makes a huge difference! At the end of the day, it doesn’t really matter how noise cancelling headphones work - it’s just kind of nice knowing that they do.

Earbuds vs. Headphones
Headphones:
Headphones rest on your outer ear and come in noise canceling options that can completely seal out ambient noises. This is a great feature for blocking out traffic or noises during flights. If you are concerned about the quality of sound, especially the bass, headphones are what you are looking for. Headphones come in both wired and wireless options.
Because of their size, headphones can be bulky and are not very portable. They can also get hot while you wear them, especially if you are wearing them while exercising. The headband that connects speakers can mess up your hair and can interfere with earrings or glasses.
Earbuds
Unlike headphones, most earbuds are designed to fit into the ear canal. This makes them much less bulky and much more portable. This is why earbuds are the ideal option for exercising and commuting. They also don’t affect your hair, glasses or earrings.
On the other hand, the sound quality of earbuds is definitely inferior to that of headphones. External sounds are not filtered out as well, which means listeners often turn the volume up higher to compensate, which can affect your hearing. Some people have a difficult time keeping the earbuds in their ears, which can be annoying after awhile.
Overall, there are pros and cons to both headphones and earphones. For sound quality, headphones are the best option. For portability and convenience, go for earbuds. If you can’t decide, get them both!

Drawer Construction 101
When it comes to finding and shopping for furniture, one of the most important things to look at is the type of joinery or construction used. There are a lot of cheap, wobbly tables, dressers and nightstands out there, and you don't want to get schooled! The type of drawer construction employed in furniture building makes a huge difference in the overall quality and longevity of a piece of furniture.
One of the most important things to look at in your search for a great piece of furniture are the drawers. A few things to remember......
- Drawers should be easy to pull open, and close. If it feels wobbly or cheap, walk away!
- Wood on wood isn't always good.
- Look at the underside of tabletops to check for corner reinforcement.
- You shouldn't see glue seeping out of joints.
Here are the best kinds of drawer construction you should look for:
Dovetail: a series of fan shaped joints used to connect drawer fronts and sides
Mortise and Tenon: a joint that utilizes a square hole carved in one of the pieces being joined and a projection that fits the hole in the other.
Metal full extension glides: these are gaining popularity. Drawer comes completely out which makes it easier to access, and it lasts longer.
Rabbet (or Rebate) and Dado: A piece of wood (called a rabbet) is inserted into a groove (that’s the dado) and is reinforced with glue. This is a common and extremely strong way to join two pieces of wood—it’s often used for joining together large boards like those used in a cabinet, dresser, or bookcase.
Be selective when it comes to wooden furniture, you guys! It's worth a little extra effort in the shopping process to end up buying something that will last a long time.

You can't toss away a new sofa in a month if you decide you don't like it anymore! There is a always a lot riding on picking out furnishings that you will not only love now, but that you will still be loving twelve years from now! Don't worry, we are here to help! Here are 10 factors to consider next time you're shopping for furniture that will get you thinking about the right questions to assist you in making the best decisions for you and your family.....
1. Do you really love it?
- Most important factor? You have to love the look.
- Never buy anything unless you can't live without it.
