Happy Halloween!

Most of my very favorite Halloween memories are from my childhood. For me, Halloween is my mother's homemade chili in bread bowls, family costume parties where we'd paint pumpkins, make caramel apples, and eat donuts off of string. Halloween means carving pumpkins on newspaper in our garage and throwing pumpkin goo on my little brother. Watching scary movies on bales of hay in a barn, getting lost in a corn maze, and hunkering down on Halloween night to sort my Trick or Treat spoils.
I was recently looking at some old photos and came across this one of my little brother and I dressed up as Snow White and one of the seven dwarfs for Halloween in 1988.
Last week, twenty four years later, I found myself dressing up as Snow White once again, but this year I have my own little dwarf who wore his uncle's vintage costume.
It's amazing how as much as things change, some things never really do. What goes around comes around, and for that I am grateful. Whatever phase of life you're currently in, hope you eat a lot of candy corn, and have a safe and happy Halloween!

Pumpkin Painting Ideas

For the most part I love carving pumpkins at Halloween, but occasionally I'm not exactly excited to deal with a) the pumpkin gut mess that inevitably gets all over the place, and b) the carved pumpkin that begins rotting the very next day. Anyone else with me here?
A great alternative to carving pumpkins is painting them! It's fun, easy, and a breeze to clean up! Plus, no rotting pumpkins! There are so many creative ideas out there right now when it comes to painting pumpkins. Can't wait to try some of these this weekend:

Sunburst Mirrors

For the past several years, the design world has been witnessing the revival of an old classic- the sunburst mirror. The concept dates back to at least the Venetian Republic, and more recently, sunburst mirrors peaked in popularity during the 1940's Hollywood Regency period. About ten years ago they made a comeback, and they've been gaining momentum ever since. Sunburst mirrors seem to be here to stay!
They come in all sorts of sizes, and in a variety of styles, from vintage, to traditional to modern. Whether you're aiming to create a focal point over a sofa or mantle, you're on the hunt for a glamorous looking mirror, or you simply want to spice up the decor on your wall, look to the sunburst mirror!

You know what Halloween means.... SUGAR COMA time! And not just for kids! As much as I enjoy the disgustingly delicious processed trick-or-treat candy, I typically prefer the real stuff. Yes, I'm a sucker for any type of home baked good found on planet earth. Today I thought I'd share some of the tasty looking treats I'm dying to make this season, just in case you live for sweets this time of year too. I apologize in advance- If you're on a diet you might want to stop reading right now! (click on the picture to find the recipes)

DIY: Haunted Halloween Village
Posted by Alicen on October 5, 2012
I've got a basement chuck full of Christmas decorations, but things are pretty sparse at my house when it comes to Halloween decor. Well, non-existant to be exact. Why is it that I always seem to forget about Halloween? Not this year! I decided I was going to remedy the situation and get things looking spooky!
The other day I made my own haunted Halloween village in less than an hour! (Inspiration from the 36th avenue blog via pinterest- I only wish I could claim the idea as my own!) If you're in the mood for a quick, cheap & easy Halloween project, this is for you!
Here's what you'll need:
A) black spray paint (go with flat- you don't want glossy)
B) Christmas village houses found at the one and only dollar store! (I bought 6 of them.)
C) black & crystal glitter acrylic paints
D) black acrylic paint & paper towels
E) pearl enamel acrylic paint
F) sponge paint brushes
And here's what you do:
1. Set out your cheerful little Christmas village and say goodbye! It's about to get spookified!
2. Next, spray paint those puppies black! I purposely missed a few of the cracks on the houses because I wanted a little color to come through to make it look old and scary.
2. Once your houses are scary and gothic, paint the pearl enamel with a small sponge brush lightly over all the surfaces of the houses to give them a nice pearly gray tint. Next, take a paper towel and dip it in black acrylic paint and rub some of the pearl surfaces to create a more weathered, spooky, textured look.
4. Time to embellish! Use the black and white glitter paints to highlight. Use as much or as little glitter as you want.
5. Once the houses are glitzed to your liking and completely dry, set up your haunted village using cob webs, lights, or whatever else you have!
Easy, right?
Happy Halloween!
