Laundry Rooms

Posted by David on June 27, 2012

Why do laundry rooms always seem to get neglected?

Is it just me?  We moved into the house we're living in almost 6 months ago, and the laundry room is still in a state of total chaos.

In theory, it's probably the room in the house that should get the most love and attention since doing laundry is the pits anyway.  May as well do it in a pretty room!  Here are some laundry rooms I would love to have......

Design Your Way: Stephen's Before & After Rambler

Posted by Alicen on June 21, 2012

Today our Design Your Way guest post is by Stephen Aikin.  He's graciously agreed to give us a before & after tour of his beautiful home.  Not only a is Stephen a talented designer, but also a craftsman- he's actually built most of the furniture in his home, with the exception of a few pieces he purchased from RC Willey.   I know you'll all enjoy seeing this incredible and transformation!  Thanks Stephen!

My partner and I purchased our home two years ago and at the time, it was a struggling, mid-century modern, rambler that had good bones, but a bad complexion.

BEFORE:

We started with resurfacing the walls and ceilings throughout the home and repainted everything in a trendy taupe so the home had some uniformity. I feel as though it is important to have continuity in small homes. If you were to paint each room different colors without having any kind of relation to the next, spaces would feel smaller than they already are.

After painting, we rebuilt the benches in the conversation pit (one of our favorite features of mid-century homes) but finished them with modern materials (stainless steel and wenge finish) so it felt up to date. Furnishing is my favorite part of making a house a home because I love the challenge of finding the perfect piece that will speak to the character of the space but also be comfortable and livable. There's no sense in creating a space that you can't use!

AFTER:

Lastly, I've attached a perspective picture of my Christmas tree that I installed for the winter of 2010-11. I wanted to have something for the holidays that was as unique as my home that also didn't scream Christmas (since my partner doesn't care for Christmas decorations in the first place. Haha... compromise always forces someone to be creative, right?) My only regret was not patenting the Christmas tree idea before Home Depot put the same concept in their 2011-12 holiday commercials but hanging from a chandelier.

8 Ways to Spruce Up Your Home for Summer

Posted by Alicen on June 13, 2012

Now that beautiful summer is upon us, it's time for a little sprucing up!  Making a few minor adjustments inside your home with the season change can help keep things fresh, relaxing, and light..... just like it feels outside.  Adopt one, or all of these tips as you summerize your home.....

1. Simplify by Storing

Start by simply cleaning up!  Store away items that aren't useful in the summer, such as blankets, thick afghans, and heavy quilts, so that you can make space for things that are.  Lightweight throws are the perfect summer sofa or chair accessory because you can curl up in them comfortably on a breezy summer evening and feel just right.

2. Lighten Up

You don't have to go out and buy all new furniture in order to make your living room feel more summery.  Simply dressing your sofas and chairs in fresh white, or light colored slipcovers is a cost effective way to make things immediately feel lighter inside.  Not a fan of white?  Put away your dark pillows and replace them with bold, bright, colorful cushions!

3. Bare is Beautiful

Let your floors breathe a little.  In the summer months, the last thing you (or your floors for that matter) need are heavy, thick, dark rugs.  Talk about depressing!  Store them all away for now and opt for no rugs at all for a nice change of pace. If you absolutely need a rug, throw down a thin, bright rug that will keep things feeling light.

4. Fruit has Many Functions

In addition to being an important summer food staple, fresh fruit and veggies are also one of your best summer decorating assets.  Simply place fresh peaches, apples, pears, avocados, tomatoes, squash, and other juicy favorites in pretty bowls or vases and display them throughout your home to create a gorgeous pop of color!

5. Dump the Heavy Drapes

Heavy draperies in your home?  While they're great in the winter months because they help block out the chill, unfortunately they also block out the summer sun!  If you can, take down your heavy draperies in the summer months and hang up lightweight, airy sheers that will allow more natural light to make its way into your home. You'll love the change.

6. Look to the Outdoors

Flowers are your best friend when it comes to bringing charm, beauty, and fragrant smells into your home.  Pull out your vases, and stock fresh flowers of all kinds and colors in every room that you can!  Even the laundry room or bathroom!  Sea shells, bird houses and plants are also great options if you want to bring in the great outdoors!

7. Swoon over Summer Plates

Even the dishes you use in the kitchen can reflect the season.  If you have more than one set of dishes, start using the lighter colored set on a daily basis!  Don't have any summery plates?  You can always hit up garage sales in your neighborhood this summer to remedy the situation for cheap!

8. Strip Down Your Bedding

Bulky, heavy, warm bedspreads in the summer are bad news.  Nobody likes to be hot at night when they are trying to get some shut eye.  Put away your bulky bedspread for the next few months and use a thin down comforter for a cooler night's sleep.  And by the way, if you have access to simple white bedding, use it!  It's the perfect peaceful bedroom color for the summer months!

Polkadots!

Posted by Alicen on June 8, 2012

One of the trends of 2011/2012 in the fashion world is the resurgence of an old favorite, the polka dot.  If you've been shopping lately you've definitely noticed that they are everywhere!  But it doesn't stop with fashion.  The polka dot trend is making its way into interior design, and not just in nurseries or kids bedrooms.  If you do it right, you can play with polka dots to create a sophisticated, classy, adult friendly space.  Whether you want a bold or subtle look, the polka dot knows how to deliver.

Nurseries With Adult Style

Posted by Alicen on June 6, 2012

For the past nine months I've been drooling over photos of baby nurseries.  Until I was in the market myself I hadn't ever given any thought to how I'd design a nursery (maybe that's weird- but I didn't plan my wedding out before I met my husband either, so go figure) so I feel as though I've recently discovered a whole new world!

I'm here to tell you that there are SO many sophisticated, classy, gorgeous, inspiring nurseries out there.  Said nurseries have only confirmed my belief that just because a baby is going toccupy a room, it doesn't mean you have to sacrifice style or taste.  Here are some gorgeous nurseries that don't scream "I belong to a kid!"......

May 27th was the very best day of my life.

It's the day I became a mother,

Life could not be any sweeter.

My husband and I are so in love with our little guy and feel so blessed.

I'm going to be busy cuddling my little man for the next couple of months so I'm taking a hiatus from the blog.  Keep reading though- there are lots of fun posts lined up for the next several weeks-  you'll especially love the great guest posts! Be back soon.  xoxo, Andie
